How many calories burned in Vinyasa yoga?

I am doing a warm power Vinyasa (working my way up to the "hot yoga") and I know I burned way more calories than the yoga option on MFP. The only yoga in the MFP system is a mild Hatha. I looked up how many calories were burned during Vinyasa, but I still got drastically different numbers. What do you enter it as? If you work in a yoga studio, what is a realistic number burned for one hour? I know it varies by weight, but using different online calculators, all with the same weight (197 lb) I got numbers between 223 and 619. I can estimate based on the median, but I would rather know the correct number.

Thanks!!
Serena

The only way to know is if you have a HRM (with a chest strap),and even then it is still an estimate. Although, a more accurate estimate than the online calculators :)

I've thought about the HRM. It is another expense though. Cost is definitely the downside to weight loss/fitness stuff. Do you have/use one?

Take a pen and sheet of paper in with you on one occasion and take a record of your heart rate every fifteen minutes for the whole class. Take an average heart rate (divide by 15) and key that figure and your vital statistics into this website:

    http://www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/heart-rate-based-calorie-burn-calculator.aspx

The site is free and you have your calorie burn ESTIMATE. No HRM - easy!

It will still be an estimate as not all raised pulse in yoga will be aerobic; some will be due to isometric tension as you hold poses which increases the pulse but doesn't burn calories quite so much as where there is an oxygen demand as in fast walking/running etc., but it will give you a ball park figure.

Then forget the heartrate from then on and just enjoy your training.

Thanks! That's what I was looking for. I'm really excited to have started something new for me. My core muscles are definitely feeling the burn today :-D
