for the most part, is is a safe bet to say " u can lose 100 calories in 10minutes?" this is assuming that you are breathing faster than usual and are putting forth effort. If so, then it makes sense that someone would lose 600 calories in 1hr...again noticibly working at a good pace. if u agree with all this, then why do some ppl say that the machines at the gym are not very accurate? I used the elliptical the other day for 60 minutes (the one that u move ur legs and arms) and it said i burned 816 calories or something like that. but mind u i was going 2 levels up every minute all the way to 20 (highest level) and was out of breath for the most part. what do u think? do u think i did burn 800+ cals in 1 hr?

ok i weigh 159 and am 5'3. and accordint to the machine my heart rate goes between 169 lowest when im goin down the incline and as high as 189 when im workin my way up.

This is an impossible question to answer for sure, the only answer is "maybe". Calories burned depend so much on your height/weight and heart rate, and unless we had all of those stats, no one can be for sure. I'd say, while you might not have burned 800 calories, you probably burned between 600-800 cals.

    Get a heart rate monitor.

Agreed. It use to be a safe bet for me. I use to be able to burn 10 cals/minute but as I've lost weight and become more fit it averages 7-8 cals/minute and I'm pushing myself even harder to get there!
