Strength Training

If burning fat is your goal, you must strength-train before cardio. The nature of the activity -- intense, but in segments -- prompts your body to burn glucose or carbohydrates for energy. Resistance training also requires strength and stamina. If you do cardio first, you will deplete your body's glucose resources and have little strength left for the strength-training part of your program, according to Jim Beatty, a fitness and wellness coach in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

Cardio Activity

If you use up your body's glucose during weight-training, your body has no option but to burn fat to get you through aerobic exercise afterward. Cardio exercise burns a lot of fuel, so if you're trying to lose fat, this is a good thing. You'll feel it, however. Glucose is your body's preferred source of energy. It will resort to fat-burning only when it has no other choice. And burning fat takes more energy than burning glucose. Expect to feel an energy-drain toward the end of your aerobics session when you do strength-training first. You can avert this a little by limiting your strength training to 20 to 30 minutes.

The trainer I recently started working with has told me the same thing. I can't remember if the specifics of why were explained the same way or not, but the message was the same - cardio after strength training. So i believe this to be accurate.

Strength training should be done prior to cardio!
The reason behind this is because you need to use all your energy to focus on lifting and weight training, if you do cardio first you use some of this energy and you'll get tired faster/not perform as well. When you do cardio last, your heart rate is spiked and you will in turn burn more calories both during cardio and resting.

I have mostly done circuit training, but when I start lifting regularly, I do not plan to do cardio on the same day that I lift. It seems to me that doing both would be too exhausting.
  • thanx much! just feel like I can't get the burn or as many reps as I usually do after cardio.. guess I was amped and loose and worked harder.. So I guess I need to push harder and get warmed up for my cardio..

If you feel like this warm your body up, it will benefit you to do 5 minutes of cardio to get your heart rate up in the beginning. You just dont want to over exert yourself by doing all your cardio at the beginning.

    I do it like this
    warm up
    Strength training
    stretching
    cardio
    stretching

It may seem like its exhausting, but realistically if you can do 15 minutes of cardio after your circuit you will burn more calories (your heart rate is already up from circuit) Try stretching between the two if you are feeling weak! By doing circuit training one day and cardio the next, your body is already in rest mode so when you have cardio day you will be sore, sluggish and believe me you won't want to be doing cardio for an hour! Add it to the end of your workouts to optimize your time at the gym
