I don't see the point of him..... if anything, having an elf on the shelf appearing in diferent places, just WATCHING me, would be enough to creep me out as a kid,,,

  • Oh seriously that thing is freaky! I don't get how anyone doesn't see that!
  • I hadn't heard of the thing until last year and thought it was the creepiest thing ever.

Me too! I tried like heck to avoid getting one. Darn kindergarten gossipers!!! My daughter was horrified that she didn't have a "scout elf" like her friends...

My kids love it. I don't see it being any creepier than Santa knowing "when you are sleeping".

If my mother hid that thing around the house at Christmas he would have mysteriously gone missing. Seriously he would have to GTFO!

My son isn't old enough yet. A friend introduced it to her son last year and after she explained it all (she didn't have the book) He looked at her and said, "Mom, that isn't an elf, it's a stalker"

Our kids love it....they run out every morning to see where it is. Why is everyone so excited to kill childhood innocence? They are only little for a short time then the reality of how much this planet sucks will set in. Lets let them enjoy being a kid for a while.

We had one when we were growing up. One night my mom decided to put him on the edge of a lampshade , not realizing his bum was touching the lit lightbulb, needless to say his bum caught on fire.

Yup, me too! Dang kids need to be learning at school instead of talking about the latest shenanigans from their Elf! Should have homeschooled then I wouldn't have to hide a creppy little elf all around my house and frost cheerios to make it look like he made them donuts! I can't be a slacker compared to all those mom's posting their Elf happenings on FB! geez!
Thank GOD he isn't here ALL YEAR!

    to each his own.
I want my kids to enjoy childhood and do my best to perpetuate Santa and other myths like that. However I also try hard not to threaten something that will never happen. so I have never used Santa as a means to get my kids to behave. In that same vein the elf really serves no purpose for us.
however every Christmas eve you will find me in my front yard chewing up carrots and then spitting little pieces out to let my kids believe that the reindeer really did eat those carrots we left out for them.

Hah.. He/She is creepy.. We had to get one also because of the classmates my oldest has talked about theirs... (She's 6) She took right to it, but when my youngest, 4 years old, heard the story, she flipped out because of it coming to life each night. I had to assure her she wouldn't come to her room during the night.. So, where we hide her, it will never be in the girls' room. That being said, don't think I haven't been tempted to take pictures of the Elf looking creepily out from under her bed or sitting up next to her in bed at night.. LOL.. She would never go to sleep in her own bed again if I did that..

I'd never heard of the "Elf on a Shelf" thing until THIS year, and I learned of it right here on MFP!! I'd seen the elves before, but didn't know there's a "tradition" that goes along with them.

What happened to the good old days when parents just told their kids about Krampus?
