2 weeks new--eat exercise calories???

So Sunday is my 2nd complete week doing this and I have been reading more and more info about how to do this correctly. So I read that you should eat your exercise calories? I don't understand. If my calorie intake is 1200 calories per day and I exercise 250-300 calories off on my elliptical each night you are telling me I should eat around 1500 calories per day? I guess my brain doesn't understand this concept b/c I am thinking the goal would be to burn off more than you take in. How do you lose weight if you eat what you burn?

Anyone wanna pitch in some helpful information for me?
