Has anyone cooked a spaghetti squash in the microwave?

Pretty much self-explanatory... I have a non-functional oven, but I LOVE spaghetti squash! Has anyone cooked this in the microwave? Whole or half? Think the supermarket would pre-cut it in half for me? I don't have a big sharp knife at my disposal..

You'll definitely need to ask someone to cut it in half. Those are brutally hard! I only microwave it because it's faster. Once it's cut in half, scoop out the seeds, place them cut side up in the microwave and nuke it for 10 mins. Easy peasy lemon squeezey!

I stab the squash a bunch of times with a knife, then pop it in the microwave whole for 5 mins. That softens it up enough that you can cut it in half, scoop the guts, then pop it back in for another five minutes to finish cooking. I've found that once it's halved, if you cook each half with cut side down on a plate it comes out a little better.

    Good luck!

Yes, punch lots of holes in husk, microwave for 15 min on high. Let it cool some before cutting and scooping out the insides or you will burn yourself.

This and a bit of additional "learned the hard way" - pay attention so you stop it when it starts getting soft. If you don't it WILL explode and let me tell you, you can really see the spaghetti in it when it's all over your microwave :grumble:

I just cooked one in the microwave last night. I just poke some holes in it and cook. They are SO HARD to cut if you don't cook them first.

Just stab it a few times to let the steam out and you can microwave it. Not sure how long but at least once it's even partially cooked you'll be able to cut it easily.

That's why you stab it a bunch of times, so the cooking gasses can vent and keep it from going boom in the deathbox.

I just poke a few holes with a fork and throw it in whole. Works great.

Sorry? I don't get it..? I don't have a functional oven so I am looking for an alternative.

Thanks everyone else for the help, I'll definitely try this out. I'll see if anyone in the supermarket is willing to pre-cut it in half for my before I buy it.

Yes, and it is super easy. there is no hard and fast rule for how long as it depends on the size of the squash. as others said, be sure to poke holes in it. i like to put mine in a large microwave safe dish, so if there is any splatter it is easier to clean!
  • i cook mine in a toaster oven... but it pretty much takes all night :/

Some nights I dont get home till 7:30-8:00, so I'm looking for something quick, easy, and not crappy! I'll take that into consideration though

This person is referring to a thread from yesterday that called the microwave a deathbox and advocated getting rid of it. It made for a hilarious read.

i only cook it in the microwave. Cut in half, place cut side down on a plate and 10-15 min depending on the size will do it!
