Note: I am not sure where to put this. So, it goes here unless a moderator feels that it shouldn't be here.
Maybe someone can help me on this issue I am worried about. Since I been on this site, I lost a good bit of weight. Enough so, that my mom wants to start losing too.
Edit: And learned a great deal too.
However, she has problems that makes it hard for her to lose weight. It's VERY hard but I know it can be done. If she would just stop being hard headed and start with the calories..
Anyway, in 2000 she had a massive stroke. A year later she started having sesiers. Fast forward three to four years later, we found out why she had the stroke. She had a hole in her heart. She got that fixed.
After that she had two hips replaced. Two and half months apart of each other. (NEVER AGAIN! NEVER!) I digress though.
Anyway, back to the question. She thinks that she should only have 900 calories a day. However, to me this raises red flags.
I know the medication she is on slows her down but to me shouldn't she be having more calories a day?
Before you all ask the medication I have no clue.
Mom is around 50.
She is about five...four? She's a head taller than I.
She currently works out three times a week (or more) for about 30 to 50 minutes a time.

I would say that 900 calories seems way too low, especially if she's not eating back the calories she burns while exercising (although I don't know if she is or not). It sounds like she wants to lose weight really FAST, but I think she needs to know that that isn't healthy, and eating more calories won't keep her from losing weight. Seeing as most humans need around 2000 calories a day to maintain our weight, eating anything less than that will help us lose weight gradually. Although obviously MFP can tell you more exactly than I can how many calories to eat a day in order to lose a certain amount of weight per week :P
good luck with your mom!0 -
Seems like a lot of complications and perhaps not the right section of the forum.
I would say encourage her to see a nutritionist or at least her general practitioner.0 -
I can't say what she eats during the day given the fact I work.
And why I put it here. Wasn't sure where this went.
ericadawn92: I have sugested MPF to her but mom...hates computers.
Edit: complications yes. However mom is German (was/is) and from what I seen...she isn't backing down. If only I could convince her about the cals.0 -
I would suggest seeing a doctor..0

Yeah I may find a way to suggest her seeing a nutritionist.
Just not too sure on how to brake this one out. Without having a million questions to answer.0 -
While I don't generally think physicians are the best at overseeing weight loss (I've seen some pretty ridiculous 'physician approved' weight loss plans around here!) I do think with your mother's health conditions she would be well-served to seek her doctor's opinion before proceeding. Best of luck to her!0
