I don't call my protein shakes and bars meal replacements, they are meals in their own right and supplements to my protein requirements...that is all...a shake being 178 to 356 cals (one or two scoops) and a bar being 200 - 300 cals...(normal to large sized)

Go for it seeing as you plan to anyway - but as someone who did do it I can assure you that it doesn't always work. Sure I lost weight but its not sustainable long term, it doesn't teach you how to eat real food in a healthy way and the weight does come back - with its pals. Oh and the bars etc are actually quite nasty.

I wouldn't do it, mostly because it's expensive.

But often times I do drink protein shakes and smoothies (both I blend myself) in place of meals. It's not to lose weight or anything, I just love drinking my calories for some reason.

If you blended your own, I'm sure more people on here would be more open.

I wouldn't either. I love food too much.

    ^^ THIS!

The only time I would do a meal replacement is if I am in a big hurry for some reason and just didn't have time to eat. But even then, I go for the protein bars instead of the shake. They are quicker and you still get to eat.

naa they have side effects, seems like it caused you to have an acute case of duckface. see a doctor and eat real food. case closed.

My belief is that if you use meal replacements - yes they are lower in calories but when you eventually introduce meals again the weight you have lost you will just put back on, you should aim to get your protein from food sources and then use protein shakes and bars to help your muscle recovery.

So why did you post the question?

And I am not sure what good habits it teaches you.
  • I use meal replacement bars as snacks sometimes, but not as like breakfast lunch or dinner. (Well I have for breakfast when running late)

I have a friendly observation. I've been loitering around these message boards for 3 months, and I've seen you post several times about these fad diets. With eating a little better, eating a little less, and exercising a little more, I've already lost almost 20lbs. Why don't you try just following what mfp sets up for you? According to your counter you haven't lost anything, I'll bet you could have been a lot closer to your goal by now if you would just start with the basics instead of focusing on all of these quick fix methods.

Edit- I forgot to quote. This was directed to the OP.

    oh snap... good advice!

Whats everyone's take on meal replacements? Would you eat them?
I love meal replacements I got some whey protein today just a little container
For some protein in the morning, But the Program im going on i will
mostly have meal replacements that's basically what it is,
Its Low carb, low calorie meal replacement , Its protein, Its goodness what yall think?

I think for the sake of this topic the definition of meal replacement should be looked at..

There are protein bars and shakes that are sized to be a "meal replacement" but there are also pre-package meal replacements at the stores..

My Dr. kind of introduced me to Myfitnesspal by making it easy. Keep track of the food you eat. When the calories are gone for the day, they are gone. You'll keep learning to make better and better decisions. Main thing is to have a plan. You will get hungry. You will be stressed. You will be rushed. You will be tempted. You will be down. Know what you are going to do before a questionable situation comes up. Be prepared. Do some exercise...even just walking is good...and take you time so that it sticks this time!

I love meal replacement bars. My current favorites are Quest Nutrition bars, but I have to admit I'm not much of an eater. What I mean is, I don't enjoy eating, I can go out to dinner and if I'm not hungry I won't order anything and if I'm busy at work, I won't eat at all. Nutrition bars help me maintain my weight, give me energy and ensure I get some of the vitamins my body needs to function. I swallow them down in two bites and I can be on my way, so I can't really comment on how yummy they are or if they would be appropriate for someone who craves actual food like pizza or a sandwich for lunch.

People are supposed to eat food. It's kept us alive for thousands of years since before shakes etc. were invented. Eat right and sweat when you can. It's that simple
