How many calories should I eat while doing insanity?

I'm starting Insanity while I'm home from college for winter break. The thing is I don't need to LOSE any weight, I'm just trying to add a little muscle , lose some fat, and be more toned. I'm 5'0 and 106 pounds, so normally for maintenance I'd have a net calorie intake of 1590. Should I stay at maintenance level, have a surplus, or a defecit? I'm so confused!

stay on maint. so, if you are 1590 and do a 400 cal workout, shoot for 1990. Probably want to think about your macro nutrients and try to go heavy on the protein.

Why don't you follow the formula in the guidebook? Personally, for Insanity, I would almost ALWAYS recommend a surplus. The level of intensity is very high and you DO NOT want to breakdown muscle tissue by eating a deficit. A caloric deficit and poor insulin control (too much bad carbs, eg white bread lots of sugar) will result in pretty much the same outcome as overeating will. Ratio of lean mass and fat mass will alter unfavourably.

Please, please, please eat clean and eat more. Insanity is a great program but can lead to bad results in the LONG TERM if you don't have a good diet. Don't screw it up by eating a deficit.
