Groats?

I visited my in laws this weekend. My father in law always has something new he is trying out to be healthier or wiser each time I see him. This weekend he gave me a very large bag of groats and cooked us breakfast with them on Sunday morning. Of course, my family tried them and we were suprised that we liked them better than oatmeal.
He told me that it is basicly a piece of oatmeal with the fringes cut off. Also, he believes they are better for you than oatmeal.
After I went back for seconds, I quickly looked them up on MFP and put my bowl down. I think it was 300 calories for a cup. However, I could only find dry Groats when I added them too my diary.
I'm wonderingt is it like rice in the way that 1 cup makes a giant bowl for the entire family? Could they possibly be a lot less calories? Does anyone know if they are in fact healthier and why? I don't like carbs very much since I have PCOS. I try hard not to go over my daily amount and it has been working very well for me. I would like a change once in awhile if this is an option that would be nice.

Groats are good. Just saying it makes me laugh. I have been fasting from starches for the past few months and one thing I miss is the ease of starches for breakfast. If you cooked a cup of dry groats I'd be shocked if you got less than 3 servings from it, possibly 4 depending on what else you eat for that meal.
This link might give you what you want in caloric information:

Groats are also called "steel cut oats".
That is confusing! In the UK steel cut oats are sliced up

Here oat groats are literally a whole grain of oat like this
