New...

I am new to myfitnesspal, but have high hopes. I got a really good recommendation and really want it to work. Any advice, tips, or tricks would be greatly appreciated

To make it work you really do need to weigh & log everything that goes down your throat on a daily basis. You will soon fathom out what are useful & non useful calories and thus avoid or limit the non useful ones, like jam doughnuts

Don't worry too much if you go over goal on one day, just allow for it on subsequent days

Weighing yourself is personal preference, I and many others do it daily, just to check. Others are weekly or even monthly. it is your choice, do what you are comfy with

I'd list these as advice as I don't think there are any tricks.

First, I will echo what farway said, log everything. If you don't you are only lying to yourself.

Consult a doctor about what is realistic. See what they recommend for a daily calorie intake.

Set realistic goals and don't compare your results with those of others.

Exercise. You should lose weight with a calorie deficit anyway but exercise should help.

Walk daily. Start off with what you are comfortable with and slowly add distance. Challenge yourself to add distance every week. There are apps and sites such as Runkeeper and Mapmyrun that allow you to track your walks. Yes, it is winter and cold and snowy so walk inside at a mall (just avoid the Cinnabons  ).

After a couple a months of walking, consider jogging/running. The Couch to 5k (C25k) is a very good program to work your way into jogging/running (or waddling for some of us) in my opinion.

One other bit of advice I would add is to take pictures of yourself now as you begin your journey. Front, back and side along with body measurements. And then do this every month to see your progress. You may not realize how much progress you are making but as you look back on the pictures and compare the measurements you'll be able to see. And for those days when you ask yourself if it is worth it, you can look back at the beginning.
