CNN REPORT ON EXERCISE

Has anyone seen the CNN report about exercise? This report says that anything more than 7.5 hours per week is a waste of time and very possibly detrimental to getting fit. I was wondering what your views are on the subject.

I think if you're just looking for general fitness and good health - 45 to 60 minutes a day is enough. Obviously people have different goals - marathon training, organized sports, personal bests ect or maybe they just love to exercise and have the time to fit hours in. Do what you enjoy!

It had nothing to do with more exercise than 7.5 hrs making you more fit or less fit. They're blabbering about this new survey that makes associations between exercise and mental health.

    http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0091743512003945
    Conclusions
This study established a hyperbolic dose–response relationship between physical activity and general mental health, with an optimal range of 2.5 to 7.5 h of physical activity per week.

Of course you eventually reach a point of diminishing return on your exercise because your body needs to rest and repair damaged tissue but I wouldn't put a hard limit on the 7.5 hour mark. For some people 7.5 was the optimal amount. Going over was beneficial but hour 8 might not be as beneficial as hour 7. That's not to say that hour 8 isn't beneficial.

Know what? I can get with this. Like most general news articles, it's too vague. Intensity of exercise matters a great deal. But even if we're talking relatively low intensity steady state cardio, 7.5 hours is a lot of time. More than an hour per day with no rest days? That's too much work for most people.

I completely agree. In fact, I don't understand how people find time to do more than that.

And as far as organized sports, when I was playing sports, only about 1/4 to 1/2 of the time spent was actually intense exercise. The rest of the time was just watching in a "ready" position and/or listening to the coach, and such. If you are honest, you are not spending that kind of time doing an *intense* effort unless you're in the pros. (or NCAA collegiate level)

I gotta say, I disagree -- I say this because I'm a fitness instructor, so I teach 3 times a week, an hour at a time. I go to 2 other classes, an hour at a time, and spend about 3-4 hours a week at home practicing my choreography, and work HARD while I do it. I practice perfect practice, so I don't get lazy and not do it right. I also take a rest day.

    It can be done.
    Just sayin'...

Where did I say it couldn't be done?
