MOTOACTV or.....?

Hey all,

My Dad is trying to get me a fitness tracker for Christmas and I'm not sure which is best. He is proposing the MOTOACTV. It looks great, but it's not very compatible with Apple products (some of the cool features are only for Droids) and it does not integrate with MFP.

Do any of you have experience with MOTOACTV? Or, do you have other suggestions?

Thanks!

I read a bunch of reviews which were negative plus I think it's discontinued so no support. I'd go with something else.

Yep, they are getting rid of it.

What do you want to track?
Can run from the real basic Garmin Forerunner 10 or Timex Marathon GPS to the do everything you ever want Garmin 910 to do even more than that Garmin Fenix or Suunto Ambit

Hm. I'm so glad I asked here.

I'm training for a Tough Mudder starting in January, so I'll be working on my ability to run outside (typically, a treadmill person). I'd like to track heart rate, distance, pace and calories burned. Also, I did like the GPS and MP3 components. It would be nice to listen to music so I don't have to carry two pieces.

I do lift and do circuit training when I'm on a good roll, so if I could use it to track that as well that would be awesome (I have read though that these devices cannot accurately track calories burned for lifting).

I'm open to any and all suggestions! :-)

In order to do GPS + music, you're basically stuck with a phone today - either a iphone with a ANT+ dongle or a phone with ANT+ built in (I think Sony is the only one on the market)
If you've got the iphone, the dongle costs ~$60, another ~$50 for a HR strap.

Option 2, which is what I do, is use a small MP3 player - a ipod shuffle or a Sansa clip. only weigh a couple ounces with a clip on the back to put on some clothes. Then a watch.

If you just want to track outdoor distance (and pace, and HR, etc), I'd look at the Garmin Forerunner 10. Cheap, as far as GPS watches go, and does ANT+ heart rate straps. BUT it doesn't sync to a foot pod (or any cycling bits, like a speed/cadence sensor) so if you ever want to use the watch to track distance on a treadmill, it'll say you didn't move.
The Forerunner 10 goes for $120 + the $50 strap (doesn't come bundled).

Are you interested in training all daily activity or just exercise. Lots of people go for Fotbit AND a HRM for exercise.
Other options are the Bodymedia fit, STRIIV (smart pedometer and Play), Jawbone up and nike Fuelband.

I'm interested in kickstarting my running outdoors, so I want to track miles, pace, HR and calories burned. GPS is awesome.

I'm thinking that, for a beginner like me, the Forerunner 10 is a good way to go.

I own a Motoactv and still use it. Unfortunately I think it is discontinued or so the rumors say. I say unfortunately because it is the only true fitness tracker on the market. Not only do I use it for running, but also weightlifting, MMA training, Jui Jitsu, training, and HIIT. It tracks all calories burned no matter what you do. There is nothing else on the market that does that. Believe me I looked and I'm still looking. The closes thing I found is the Garmin 900 for triathletes. Hopefully, the Motoactv will be replaced. You can still get one at a good discount but you are definitely taking a chance. I purchased mine when it first hit the market and now I'm on my third device. The other two were replaced under warranty. If you training for a tough murder I recommend a Garmin.

I think a Forerunner 10 is a great choice! I use the 610 and love it but it's overkill for most people ( myself included ).

Thank you everyone, for your input. I settled on the Forerunner 10. Someday maybe Ill get something a little more tricked out but I should see if running outside works for me first (which it better, because....Tough Mudder).

    Cheers!
