Are these ingredients safe?

  • If you drink 3 cups of coffee a day, brew a pot and add milk / cream and sugar, it will be much better for you.

Yes exactly. Coffee (cocoa beans) have been around for thousands of years and have been taken by indigenous people for that time period for exactly the same reason we drink it today. Cut out all the artificial and chemical crap and just get some good old fashioned coffee with heavy whipping cream (because this cream only requires a little to make it twice as creamy as half and half) and raw sugar or stevia.

For whatever reason, the coffee seems to ward of cravings for a while, which helps me from going over my calories.

That will be the sugar warding it off. They are empty calories, if you want sugar & something that WILL be better....grab an apple. Has the sugar to stop the craving & WILL keep you full a little better.

Yes, don't eat sugar. Instead, have some sugar!

It will probably cause inflammation and insulin spikes.

If the OP has been drinking 3 a day and this hasn't happend so far... I'm pretty sure it probably won't.

OP: If you are concerned, then you should cut back. Otherwise, just be sure to log it!

I do! I make sure to log all liquid calories. I actually drink two servings worth of mix in 3 cups. As far as I know, it hasn't happened.

I guess I'm really just wondering if there's any reason for me to be concerned. If it's something that helps me not to overeat and keeps me awake when I'm studying for finals, I'm cool with it. If it's something that's encouraging me to overeat when I'm not drinking it, and has questionable ingredients that I should be wary of, I want to eventually cut it out.

Well as others have said... it's not the best choice. But you have to decide for yourself how important this item is to you. There are things that I could never completely give up that I still have from time to time. You have to decide for yourself.

PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL = trans fat

trans fat is one of the few, if not the only food item that should actually be limited or avoided.

"Limit or avoid anything that contains PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL or HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL (no matter what type of vegetable). These are trans fats and the worst type of fat for you."

That's where I'm confused. The label says 0% trans fat. I think I've heard that they're allowed to round down if it has less than .5% trans fat....maybe that's where it's hidden? Thanks for pointing that out.

Yeah, there is a limit. I've heard < .5 grams per serving. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but by calculating at a ridiculously small serving size manufacturers can get by saying 0%.

    Can't pronounce chemicals = don't eat?

2-Ethylphenol, Quinic acid, 3,5 Dicaffeoylquinic acid , Dimethyl disulfide , Acetylmethylcarbinol, Putrescine , Trigonelline !!

...and that's just the coffee.

Thanks. And thank you, everyone, who responded to this topic. I'm still not sure I can give this coffee up completely, but I definitely need to cut back. Does anyone have any ideas about another healthier coffee that won't give me the jitters?

If it wasn't safe for human consumption, they would not be able to sell it. Trans fats are about the only foodstuff that should be avoided if possible, unless you have a medical condition, but the amount you will get in the creamer is probably not a concern unless you use copious amounts.

It's entirely up to you, but in my diet, this is the one thing I avoid at all costs:

    PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL

Ditto...translation = Trans Fats and none make it into my diet. That said, you have to do what works for you...booze isn't good for me either, but I choose to partake on occasion.

plain old coffee without any sweeteners or whiteners in it is "healthy". (heck, even cream & sugar is fine, nutrition-wise; it just ruins the cup  )

Sorry to say this but It sounds disgusting and I'm not even a totally clean eater. Why don't you try decafe coffee? I have a really nice organic one that I use sometimes.

I'm guessing this is an "International Coffee" or something along those lines.
Why are you trying to use the message boards as a way to excuse something I think you already know you shouldn't have?
It took me a few seconds to find the word COFFEE in that mix. This is not "instant coffee". It has instant coffee as an ingredient, but it's mostly sugar and cream. No offense but the modern day coffee cup is 12-16oz big so if you are making a cup of that size, I don't believe that you are using less than a serving of mix in that cup unless you are making it with milk. If you are making it with milk, you have to ADD the calories from the milk too.

Of course you can give it up. You just don't want to. So, if it's that much of a staple for you, then f-it. I don't think anyone here that gives half a crap about giving good advice will tell you to drink that stuff.

Replacement coffee? Try actual instant coffee in a decaf variety. Koenig, Starbucks, etc make actual instant coffees, and then you can specifically measure in sugar free syrups, almond milk, etc to taste.

Most of those ingredients aren't good for you. But everything in moderation. I try to stay away from trans fats aka partially hydrogenated oils, but it's pretty hard to do all of the time.

Stop over thinking this. Becoming healthy does not mean you cannot have what you like to eat/drink. What it does mean is that you need to realize how much you are having and use control with the more impacting foods/drinks.

    Well, safe in moderation. =P

My bad...very trace amounts of Trans Fats in my diet. It is also my understanding that the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are different than trans fats derived from hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils.

Maybe this is a regional preference talking, but have you considered instant coffee? That way you can control how strong the coffee is. I usually drink 2 cups of instant coffee in the morning and I'm fine, but the last time I had two cups of filter coffee, I had the jitters like whoa.

anything with "hydrogenated" in it is not safe.

I'd say you're fine since it's such a small amount, but I do try to avoid hydrogenated oils.

I stick with coconut oil, olive oil, real butter, etc. But some processed/box stuff is going to have hydrogenated vegetable oil.

They make the serving size small enough so they can claim it has no trans-fats.

I once bought International Cafe Coffee, instructions were for 6 oz, serving size was 2 oz....so they could hide the trans-fat.
    EVIL.

I'd be more concerned about the fact that the instant coffee I was drinking only listed coffee two-thirds of the way down the list of ingredients......
