Is the Progresso Lite soup considered a processed food? I usually add a cup of frozen brocoli to it...quite filling??? Jen:smile:

If you didn't cook it yourself from fresh ingredients then I believe it would be called "processed." It is in a can and has things added to it to prevent spoiling. That said, I am sure there are worse things you could eat than Progresso Light Soup.

I just picked one of the soups and this is the ingredients:
Ingredients: Chicken Broth, Carrots, Cooked White Chicken Meat, Celery, Green Beans, Curly Pasta (wheat flour, semolina wheat, egg white*, whole egg*), Red Bell Peppers, Water. Contains less than 1% of: Peas*, Maltodextrin, Corn Protein (hydrolyzed), Salt, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Chloride, Yeast Extract, Carrot Puree, Modified Food Starch, Natural Flavor, Sugar, Onion Powder, Soy Protein Isolate, Sodium Phosphate, Spice, Garlic Powder, Chives*, Chicken Fat, Whey Powder, Egg Yolk*, Beta Carotene (color). *Dried

I've never seen Maltodextrin, Xanthan gum or several of the other things growing in a garden. Rule of thumb - if it comes in a can and has a bunch of things you can't pronounce it is processed. I agree with above though - there are probably a lot worse things you can eat. (personally I think Progresso is gross, but that has nothing to do w/if it is processed or not - just don't like the taste)

^^^ Amen! I originally lost my 70lbs eating soup for lunch every day rather than school lunch (it was 1987, before they touted soup as a weight loss food). This was also before "light" soups came out. Campbell's Natural Harvest has some yummy soups and look for Low Sodium.

I should say I DO eat canned soup - or rather usually Campbell's Soup to Go Cups. I'm sure it has similar ingredients - all I know is the sodium is outrageous. So I'm not anti-canned soup or anything. I also make my own soup on occasion - it's really easy - just throw a ton of veggies in a pot w/some broth and spices.

Yes, it is processed. But I personally don't equate that as "bad." However, I've been making my own soup (somewhat) and it's cheaper, and healthy.

I just buy a big box of vegetable broth, and add white meat chicken, assorted frozen veggies and veggie pasta. Added some spices and it came out super yum!
