Help! Thyroid problem & baby weight!

So, I have been trying to loose weight since I had my son, he is now 18 months and I am really no different to when I first had him. I have two children: after my first the weight fell off but since then I have given up smoking. I also have a thyroid problem, diagnosed 13 years ago which is medicated with 150mcg/ day. This is very unstable and goes up and down constantly.

My cals are barely ever over 1000 but I do no exercise (other than running about at work all day as a HR Manager) , this is because I have no spare time: what will working full time from 6:30 am - 3:00pm (often taking work home)/ cooking/ cleaning/ mothering etc etc. I am married but my husband doesn't do all that much  Then by the time the children are asleep I am so tired.

Now: 12 stone, dress size UK 14
Normally: 9 to 10 stone, dress size UK 10 (& happier)
Height: 5'2
Age: 28

I really would like to be back to my normal happy slim self by May 2013, as it will be my brothers wedding & I would love to be in the photos!

Any advice from people with thyroid problems: food to avoid/ eat, etc etc would be greatly received, any advice to help me slim down would be fantastic!!

I will try to unlock my food diary (if I can figure it out) so you can see how I eat! :blushing:

I'll be the first to say it. Eat more. You can't expect to help your metabolism by netting 1000 calories a day.

Search the forums for "In Place of a Roadmap". Follow that.

  • Also, join the hypo/hyperthyroid group! It's a great bunch of people and I've really learned a lot there. I'm still getting my meds adjusted and my success has been very limited, so I know what you are going through. :flowerforyou:
  • I thought that was going to be the first comment! d'oh. Ok, I will try. :flowerforyou:

I am also the mother of an 18 month old as well as a 7 year old and I have hypothyroid on Synthroid 88 mcg/day and been pretty stable on that dose since giving birth. I eat about 1300-1500 calories a day depending if I work out. I work 6:30 am - 3:00 pm and 3-5 days a week I go to the gym directly after work for 45 minutes and then pick my kids up at day care and go home to cook, clean, mother and finally relax briefly before it's my bed time. If I don't go to the gym right after work, I'm never going to get that exercise in because that's my only time of day I can make it happen. It's not fun for me to exercise, but I know I need to do it to lose weight because controlling my diet will not work alone. Please feel free to add me if you wish.
  • YES, EAT MORE!! But, watch what you do eat. Check out the group...

I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis...kinda the same as Hypo but, it is an enlarge thyroid without the High levels. But, my symptoms were the same...gained weight, hair loss, mood issues, etc. My mom is also Hypo and is on meds for it as well and has always had a problem, for as long as I can remember.

ALL HOPE IS NOT LOST!!!! There are many people who use this as an excuse and many others that dont let it hold them back. DO NOT let it hold you back. it will be harder for us to lose the weight but, we can do it. Your "diet" restrictions are going to be different then someone just trying to lose weight.

    Here is a good article...

    http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp?id=635&page=3

In a nutshell...cut back on the "bad" carbs and simple sugars (pies, cookies, etc.), reduce your caffiene/stimulant intake, eat your fruits & veggies, increase your fiber intake, and drink plenty of water.

For me, I also started taking a multi-vitamin before I was started on meds and just kept myself moving! I get those days where I can actually tell when I've had too much caffiene or too much sugar because I get sluggish and cant seem to get myself out of bed in the morning for my workouts. CAFFIENE is a major vice for me and I am trying to cut back on the coffee but it is hard. So, I just dont have much if any after I drink my coffee in the morning.

GOOD LUCK and feel free to friend me if you'd like.

I am hypothyroid and have two kids age 7 and 2. I am 5' 2 1/2" and I used to eat 1200 but stalled so upped to 1400 cals. I would say you need to up your cals as you are probably not eating enough so your body is hanging onto everything thinking it is being starved. Good luck :flowerforyou:

Actually, just had a wee look at your diary and unless you aren't logging everything I don't know how you manage through the day with so few calories. Please up your calories as you won't be doing yourself any good at all. I don't exercise either (time problems too) but I have still lost without doing that.
  • 1400, my goodness. Ok. I will try that then. Thank you
