Preggo Mamas- sodium intake?

I've been experiencing dizziness when I first get out of bed, tip my head back to look up, etc… and I've noticed something interesting. On the days where my sodium intake is maxed out or over, that day, as well as the next, I don't get dizzy. However, if I'm considerably under, I get lightheaded a lot. My original intent was to keep my sodium intake at bay, because I have no desire for edema this time around, but I'm really liking not being dizzy! Anyone else experience this?

Check your BP. Sounds like your BP is dropping.

I had the same problem early in my pregnancy if my intake was less than 2,000mg per day. My resting BP is very low outside of pregnancy though.

Also, you're better off posting these questions in this group: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/1920-fit-fabulous-pregnant-

You'll get a lot better answers with a lot less snark than what you get on the main boards here.

Sodium restriction is not recommended during pregnancy.

Um, thanks. I recognize this is the internet, Albert. If you read carefully, I'm not asking for advice; I am curious if anyone else had experienced this. My BP is within it's normal range.

@gdd, thanks- did not know that. It wasn't an issue last pregnancy, and this only started happening about a week or so ago. I have a dr. appt a couple days after Christmas, and will bring it up then.

I know water retention is a normal part of pregnancy, but I really don't want to have the issues I had last time. I was put on bedrest for high BP and severe edema, and was being watched for preeclampsia. Striving to avoid all that!

I am 25 weeks pregnant and my doctor has advised sodium restriction.

As for the OP, I did experience a bit of this early on, but it has since gone away. Not sure if it is sodium related or not.

Definitely not true for many women. I'm on a sodium restriction now from edema, and I'm 30 weeks.

You never want to eat too much sodium when pregnant. Not only can it cause you to swell but it can cause preclampsia and your baby has to be delivered early. If you are feeling dizzy I would definately call your OB and ask for an emergency appointment to check your blood pressure. They will be able to determine whats best for you and the baby and they might put you on some sort of diet.

You might also have vertigo and that can cause the dizziness as well. I am not a dr but I have been both pregnant and with vertigo...hope this helps a little!!!

Not true. Might want to check with your dr on that. I am a RD and work with OB patients. Sodium restriction is NOT generally recommended during pregnancy.

Im not saying cut out sodium Im saying dont go over the recommended amount per day. Sodium can cause your ankles to swell and you CAN get preclampsia!! When I was pregnant they always told me to watch it!!!
