Hi, my name is Marisa and I'm a 26 year old mommy of one. I've been struggling for a few years to get my weight under control since having my son. Now that I've finally joined a gym and started working out I'd like to find the most effective ways to burn my belly fat and get a nice flat, toned tummy. I'm a huge fan of Spinning and the Elliptical so my legs are slim and in great shape, but my upper body needs some work. What are the best routines you guys have found that get you great results. I don't use weight machines or free weights often because A) I don't really know how to use them B) They're a little intimidating to tell you the truth. So bring on the Fitness tips my friends!!!

  • only do like 10 min of warm up cardio lift heavy 5x a week and light cardio 1x a week.
I get pretty scared at the gym using the machines as well, but i went on bodybuilding.com and used all their resources and went in the gym educated. I write everything down or take my phone and look at my routine while i'm there. it will take lots of time to lose your belly but it will eventually go. also watch what you're eating. eat clean and no complex carbs after noon. i hope this helps :)

i took a fitness class a few years ago in college. and all the instructor said to get rid of fat is cardio cardio cardio. too much muscle building under fat makes you look bigger cause the fat is not going away. but i did do a lot of the ab machines and i have to say i ended up with a nice stomach. then i had 3 kids and havent had the time or found a gym i like to go back to to get my abs back. right now i am just working on losing overall baby weight to start with.

If in doubt... cut it out? Try a bit less drastic measure. Perhaps, first lose the excess weight through diet and exercise and if you aren't satisfied, then spend to make yourself content.

I'm a huge fan of cardio but this is what is helping my tummy and i do this at home.

Stand with feet width apart, tense up tummy muscles and hold core still, punch first forwards fast x30 then same again but punch slightly to the side (right arm punch to left, left arm to right), get wider and wider with eac set of reps till you're punching right round your side. I do four reps so 120 punches. Doesn't take long and if i really hold my tummy i feel it later. I don't know a lot about exercise but this has tightened up my tummy as i'm losing weight.

    Hope this helps.

My comment was really tongue in cheek. I did everything right and still needed the tummy tuck. I waited 2 years after losing my weight, but 3 babies and 70 extra non-pregnant pounds had done a lot of damage to the underlying muscles. It was actually cleaved. No exercise will correct that. I was also 57 years old when I got it done (3 years ago almost to the day!) so I was lacking elasticity. It truly helped my self-esteem as I headed out into the dating world again after my divorce. I should point out I had plenty of self esteem to begin with. This just gave me a little boost of confidence. By all means, try everything else first! I did.

while i agree cardio does burn fat, if you have been over weight for a long period of time and have had kids, like myself, cardio only goes so far. For the past couple years I've been what you can call "skinny fat" skinny with clothes on but fat underneath. I did plenty of ab exercises and more than my fair share of cardio (around 5 miles a day of running or 75 mins of eliptical) i still had the mommy gut that MRL is talking about . After losing 70lbs, and maintaining still mommy gut stayed. the only thing that helped me was lifting. But everyBODY is different, so what works for me may not work for you. if you don't see results doing one thing its time to try another :)
