Strength training/lifting for sagging skin??

How exactly does strength training or lifting firm sagging skin? I see this advice all the time but can't wrap my mind around how it helps. I can see it firming up the underlying muscles but not the skin.

Or is the idea that by strength training you will grow your muscles and it will fill out your sagging skin? I don't really want to trade being large from being fat to large from being muscular. Yes it's probably healthier but it's still large.

Am I missing something?

    I don't think you can firm it up very much by strength training. Usually if it's excess skin, it will just hang forever or need to be surgically removed... I have it on my tummy from having 3 kids. It dangles when I do push ups. LOL Gross! But I can't get rid of it no matter how hard I try.
