In the main it is not a bad estimate on days where you don't go over or under on your calories too much.
I started making a note of it each day (on my spreadsheet against the date 5 weeks hence) to see how it did.
  • Just wanted to know!! LOL its very motivating because I really wanna see that number in 5 weeks!!!

Regardless of whether or not you meet that 5 week forecast, remember that weight loss is a marathon and NOT a sprint. The important part is just finishing, NOT how quickly you do it.

    Good luck!

I always think "yeah, right" to that prediction... I eat under (don't eat back all my burned cals) so that prediction is generally a faster weight loss than I am really seeing. But it still makes me think I will see that number SOMEday and it is motivating.

I pencil it on my wall calendar sometimes, just for fun. Sometimes it's bang on. Sometimes... well.. not so much. Really depends on how consistent I am with eating well, and sometimes I have a 'whoosh' and lose more than predicted.

I love that in your ticker the little person is not only getting skinnier but also taller.

    Sigh.... I wish. :frown:

That number is just a calculation based on your calorie deficit for that particular day and it's saying if your deficit was the same as that every day, that's what you'd weigh in 5 weeks.
If your calories intake and output are close to the same every day, it should be fairly accurate.
    Mine always was.

I'm seeing results after I day of switching over here from weight watchers so that would be great to get to that number!

This. You have to remember that statement says if you ate that way every day. Nobody is going to eat the exact same thing every day.

Besides... by MFP math I should only be losing 0.7 lbs a week, but I'm actually losing 1 lb a week.

I found it very motivating and that's the reason I got hooked on MFP in the first place. I thought, Harrumph! We'll just see about that! And then, 5 weeks later, I had lost even more than was predicted. YAY MFP :)

i find it a load of bollocks. My calorie intake varies daily, and thus the estimate is just rubbish, one day i will be umpteen pounds up, next I will be same down. i ignore it

I like it. It gives me a kick up the *kitten* when I eat over, and see how much weight I will put back on in 5 weeks. Weight I have really struggled to lose.

No, MFP underestimates it every time.

It's pretty spot on for me - I make a note of it 5 weeks forward every now and again and check back in at that date - I always hit it or go under. 5 weeks is long enough to account for natural fluctuations I think.

I'm pretty bang on my numbers though, more often under than over which balances the occasional splurge. I never splurge enough to put me out of my 1000 kcal deficit. I also adjust my intake every 5 kg as prompted by MFP.

If you take note of your numbers on an abnormal day (eg. burnt 1500 kcal on a long hike and didn't eat it back) then obviously the prediction is unlikely to come true.
  • Once in a while I'll write the weight it says I'll be in my calendar. It's been pretty accurate so far.

Never for me. I'm very accurate with my logging, yet my weight loss goes way slower than MFP says it does.

I do look at that number and think oh ok but never assume if I'm doing it right it will be the number on the scale after 5 weeks scale fluctuates and sometimes I'm over on sodium or haven't been able to drink as much water but its ok to give you an idea x

Load of crap! I would have been passed my goal by now if that were the case.

    Nope....not even close.

Maybe it was more accurate back when I was losing, but now that I'm maintaining more (only 4lbs to go)..... I should've been at my goal weight weeks - months ago.

A good estimate though and a good motivator to help keep you on track.

Never ever ever. I'd probably be at my goal by now if it was true. It just makes me frustrated and sad.

I actually record this number 5 weeks out every so often, I have been close a few times, within .2-.4 pounds. For me my cals can vary day to day, not huge but 10-15-100-200, etc., if you close it your diary and then add more food and close it out it will change that number, interesting to see how that last snack could change the outcome.

It would seem unlikely most people eat the exact same amount of calories every single day, which is why that number is more a suggestion then an absolute. I did discover, though I cannot recall if online or the app you can go back 5 weeks and close that day out again and see what it said at that time, I do this occasionally to, you know for fun.

Eta. I have my profile set to lose 1.5 pounds a week which given how much more I need/want to lose is very obtainable still while sticking to my cal goals, most days I am within 100 of that goal (up or down).
