Creative exercise???

Tonight as I scrubbed the floors by hand I found my self holding plank position. Also as I scrubbed the baseboards and cupboards I was doing squats. Just wondering how some of you other MFP fit in creative exercise?

  • Sometimes I dance as I do dishes or folding laundry. Somedays I say scr*w it and dance instead of working out. I make sure I work up a sweat though. I turn on My Darkest Days 'Porn Star Dancing', 'Move your body', or Rihanna 'Where have you been', or something that makes you move and pretend I'm out somewhere having a good time.

I do a lot of it at work. I work at a grocery store where I often front items on shelves. I use a milk crate to step on and reach top shelves. Therefore I do step-ups a lot. I also do squats to get to the lower shelves. I also work in a place where I clean chairs and benches every time I work, so I bend at the waist a lot and it is great exercise. We have around 40 booths and 75+ chairs.

I hold myself in Chair Pose while I blowdry my hair. I do tiptoe raises while I brush my teeth. I balance on one foot while I wash dishes or cook. I do angled pushups on the monkey bars at work.

Heh, I teach preschool...most of my day is a workout. Getting up and down from child-sized chairs a million times a day = squats, right? Up and down off the floor a million times. Walking backward through the halls. Up and down the stairs. Pumping my legs on the swings. Playing chase. Managing a tantruming child. Climbing the monkey bars. Lifting children. Running back and forth across the classroom or across the playground to handle each and every little/big emergency. You'd really think it would be enough to maintain a healthy weight, right? But it's not.

I turn up the music and dance while I clean, it helps pass the time. I also scrub my floors on my hands and knees and do some squats at the same time. I scrub the carpet and couch by hand too and thats a work out in its self (hopefully my arms firm up with all the scrubbing). House cleaning is never fun but music changes everything for me. 80s dance music gets me going or even hair bands.

I jog in place when I'm doing various things. Of course it's not as aerobic as the actual thing, but there are many times when I can work it in - as in while watching TV. When I really do it like I mean it, for an extended amount of time, I go ahead and wear my HRM and count it as exercise. Otherwise, I just do it as a "bonus". Calf raises while prepping food or rinsing dishes.
  • I walk to and from the grocery store (fifteen minutes one way on foot, lots of hills). It's good for the environment, combines cardio and strength training, and gets me out in the fresh air and helps me get to know my neighbours as I pass by various gardens and/or houses being worked on. MOST creative form of exercise? I bench-press my two-year-old niece, and kiss her every time I bring her down. She giggles like crazy, and there's nothing like baby giggles to motivate you to do more reps.
