How to make the most of my gym workout?

I've only been working out for a few weeks now. I had surgery 2 months ago to remove my thyroid so was pretty out of shape. So far I've mostly been doing a combo of the elliptical and treadmill for up to 45 mins. I don't really enjoy cardio and get pretty bored (hence switching between the two machines) so often I stop at about 25 mins and then move on to machines and focus on my upper or lower body or core a couple times a week. I've lost about 7-8 lbs but am looking to get the most out of my hour at the gym. Heavy lifting looks amazing but not sure I'm ready for that? Any suggestions or good work out routines?
