I am planning to run a 5 mile race tomorrow, which starts at 11 am. For earlier race starts, I'll eat oatmeal for breakfast and maybe a banana before the race. How should I eat for this race, since it starts later and I probably won't finish until nearly noon?

I would eat my normal lunch, just a lil early.

i'd have breakfast, and consequently lunch, earlier, or just have my breakfast later.

The fact that I didn't pre-register and it's an hour drive to the race site factors in too. I'll have to leave home about 9:30.
  • I'd suggest having a protein bar when you get up, and then eat your usual pre-race meal the same amount of time before the race as you usually do. So if you have oatmeal at 6:30 for an 8:00 start, have your oatmeal at 9:30. Hydrate at a steady pace all through the morning. Good luck!

It's not a marathon, it's a 45 minute run. Eat like you normally would, have a light snack if you want before the race and your lunch after.

Mokey41, Your'e right. It's not a marathon. I wish it was only a 45 minute run. It'll take me about 55 minutes. I guess my issue is that I tend to get low blood sugar and feel awful if I eat my oatmeal and then don't exercise within the hour. If I do, I'm fine. I plan to eat oatmeal right before I leave and hope it works out. May take a small snack to eat when I get there too. I'm sure I'll be fine. Was just wondering about what others do with a late race start.

Hope your race goes well! :flowerforyou:
Late to the conversation - I would have said 'Eat the oatmeal at home, eat the banana in the car...'

    Shake a leg! Woo!

Just eat normal breakfast. Take a bar to eat on the way. This isn't really taxing your system. It's just a short run. you'll be fine no matter what you do.

hahaha I guess it does sound like I don't know what I am doing. This is NOT my first race, but the first one with a late start. I've run in 3 others, well, 4 if you count one 3 years ago....two 5K's and a 4 mile race this year. So, I guess I am a relative newbie to racing. Still trying to figure some things out. I'm hoping to keep improving and do some longer races next year....maybe a half marathon. Not sure yet. Thanks for the input.
