Hi, I am using my fitness pal to control my calorie intake while pregnant. Obviously it is a bit harder to see if I am doing well or not, because I am going to gain weight. Is there any setting in my fitness pal for pregnant woman? How many calories should I be consuming daily?

Hi, i wouldn't really diet while pregnant, you need so many nutrients to build a baby. In the first trimester you need about 200 extra calories and towards the end about 400 than your normal intake. I don't know how much you weigh or what your current diet is like as there's not much info on your profile so I can't really say but in general I would eat a varied balance diet ... plenty of lean meat and fish, lots of fruit and veg and wholegrains and snack on healthy stuff like nuts, dried fruit etc. Take a multi vitamin and take up a class like yoga or pilates (one for pregnant women) and do plenty of walking. This should keep you and your baby healthy but also keep your weight from increasing too much. Save the dieting for after you've given birth.1

I would see a physician. They can tell you how many calories you should eat to keep the baby healthy. They can also make sure you're eating enough for yourself. You could even see if the doctor can recommend a dietician to make sure you eat the right foods which would be fantastic for the little one.0

Speak to your doctor about this. Congratulations by the way! :flowerforyou:0

Congrats!
You don't really need any extra calories in the first trimester, although in both my pregnancies I found that i craved carbs and ate a lot more bread than I usually would. I guess that's what my body needed.
If I were to have another baby i'd probably stick to my 1500 calories a day limit and i'd continue to exercise. I exercised regularly in my first pregnancy, but not in my 2nd as I was so tired (my 1st was 13 months when I got pregnant with my 2nd). So I put on a lot of weight 2nd time round.
You can continue to do exercise that you've already been doing, but don't start anything new. After a certain number of weeks you're not supposed to do abs exercises or lift weights from standing up.
Hope your pregnancy goes well.0 -
You really don't need a lot more than what you normally would eat if you weren't dieting. Remember you're nourishing a tiny little being not a truck driver!0

Hey!
I'm 30 weeks now, and I've only gained 21 lbs.
I eat about 250 calories above my TDEE and make time to exercise every day even if it's just a light walk around the block to keep me mobile and active. I'm usually up and moving around a lot during the day as well. For first trimester, you really don't need more than your maintenance calories. You will need 200-500 more calories per day depending on your pre-pregnancy BMI as your pregnancy progresses to make sure you get enough nutrition.
You CAN have a healthy pregnancy gain.

I was told around 300 extra, but that's not if you are eating at a deficient. You need to eat at maintenance while pregnant, but none of us are doctors and seeing as how we all are giving you different answers you should probably discuss this with your doctor. It's good to keep track even while pregnant though. Pregnancy isn't an excuse to balloon up. Good luck in your pregnancy and congratulations!0

Ask your Dr. End thread.0

I am a Registered Nurse. You don't need any extra in the first trimester and only 200-300 in the second and third trimester.0

You actually don't need anything extra than maintenece calories until the last trimester where you need 300 extra (which is the equiv of a couple of bits of toast).
If you are overweight it's perfectly acceptable to lose weight during pregnancy as long as you discuss it with your midwife.

Ask your Dr. End thread.
Doctors know very little about pregnancy unless they are antenatal consultants. Pointless speaking to them.0 -
The first three months you DON"T need extra calories. Second trimester you add 200 to the calories you already eat and then add 300 more in your third trimester.0

Congratulations! Definitely talk to a doctor, because you want to build a strong healthy baby. Worst case scenario is being thin and having a miscarriage, and that wouldn't feel very good.0

I gained 15 pounds with my pregnancy. I was already overweight and I was concerned about how that would impact my pregnancy. I worked with my doctor and a nutritionist. I ate about 300 extra calories but that didn't start until late in my second trimester.0

I think with my youngest my doctor had me on 2200-2400. Check with your OB at your next visit to make sure...0

Congrats to you! Better off to ask your doctor than to ask for medical advice over the Internet. IMHO0

Congrats! Please ask your doctor what's the healthy cal limit for you. Everyone goes through pregnancy differently and you might or might not need more base on your health condition.0
