whey vs soy

i have always used whey protein and successfully. i was at a friend's house last night because he wanted to introduce body by vi to me. that stuff is made from soy product. i tried soy flour and soy milk before and gagged and got sick from both ... this shake didnt taste bad but im concerned about the soy. i pretty much left that subject alone after i got sick from it so im curious to see what your input is on it

Body by Vi is a waste of money

well that i know..im just curious about the soy protien and its effectiveness.. being in marketing and sales i sat through this thing for three hours and marvelled at how people get sucked in to things. they gave me free packets to use and so i took them and figured id try them to see if any miracles occur. none yet ..im not really excited about the taste --tastes chalky to me. i can taste an aftertaste of soy. i just hope i dont get sick from it like i did other soy products.

my input with diets is that any diet works if you stick to it . these people have been able to master marketing their product big time. i actually like my whey based protein better

Seems to me you've answered your own question. Want more incentive not to switch?
I'll bet the whey you are using is a lot cheaper than the soy(Vi) you don't like.
  • Its not about which one is better but it is more on which one your body can handle more. Obviously you have intolerance to soy so that should be out. In my case since I don't have any intolerance to foods so I'm neutral as long as I take it in moderation.

They're both complete proteins with high bioavailability. Whey a little bit better absorbed than soy, but it's a marginal difference.

I've read in a few different places that over-consumption of soy can adversely effect the thyroid in some people. Anybody else hear about that? I could look it up, and I probably will later, but it's one of the reasons I stopped eating so much tofu a couple years back.

I use soy isolate from sprouts because I am wary of trying whey due to my lactose intolerance. I've read mixed things on it so I'd rather not risk it. I can't compare it taste wise because the soy I get is flavorless. I blend it in smoothies and oatmeal and don't taste a thing.

Soy is a goitrogen. I limit it because I have thyroid disease. I'm not sure how much effect it would have on a person without the disease. There's evidence that women who have had estrogen sensitive breast cancer should limit it too, but it's never been proven that it will do anything to help prevent the disease. If you're concerned though, whey is cheaper and just as good, if not better.

Aside: saturated fat is really good for the thyroid- especially MCTs like coconut oil, again though- I'm speaking as someone with the disease. Don't know if it's applicable to people without it.

There are lactose free whey isolates- you just have to be a little choosier than the average user to make sure you get a high purity whey that says it's lactose free. But if you're happy with soy, that's fine too.
