Sometimes I hate being an hourglass figure!

Like right now...when I'm surrounded by amazing sales but none of the clothes fit my figure in a flattering way because they're likely designed for someone with no bust and no hips.

Usually, though, it's great being so shapely!

It just hard it is to find clothes that fit without tailoring.

What are you trying to buy honey?
I'm an hourglass too (my waist in 10 inches less than my busy and hips)
I manage just fine - to be fair I'm in England so can't aside on brands.
You just need to know your 'rules' for dressing.
Google 'what not to wear' or Gok Wan. Loads of great advice for us shapely girls

Pencil skirts, fitted dresses, wrap tops, v necks, bootleg jeans, curvy skinny jeans with knee high boots, belted tunics. Lots of options for curves!

what are you trying to buy?

i prefer dresses so i usually wear wrap, sheath, shirt dress and a line styles

for pants: i'm short waisted so i go with stretchy, mid to low rise , slightly boot cut pants

    for skirts, pencil skirts

tops and sweaters are tees, or i found that ny & co sells good buttoned down blouses.

i'm somewhere between a ruler and an hourglass (big boobs and upper thighs but with a straight waist) and i dont have too difficult a time finding stuff. also if you're taking things to be tailored for more than just taking up a hem, shortening a sleeve, etc then the cut of the clothing isnt for you

where are you shopping ? places that have a somewhat vintage feel to them are going to be excellent places to go. i also like H&M, ny and co, express and modcloth

Not looking for anything in particular...I'm just at the mall killing time til I can check into my hotel. I have a pretty good idea of what looks good on me...and its hard to find off the rack (i generally have to take even the contoured styles in at the waist) so when I find something that looks great off the rack I buy it even if it's not on sale.

It's just so unfortunate that all these gorgeous clothes are on sale and none of them fit right. I'm still trying them on, lol, just to see if the cuts have gotten better. And also bc I'm stuck here for a few hours and there's no bookstore.

Love love love H&M!!! Jeans i have had some success at specialty stores (fave pair right now is by PZI) but usually just get whats on sale in the juniors section (I have a low rise) and get it taken in at the waist.

what i usually end up doing is buying the same brands, especially if i'm at a department store.

for dresses, i've found that for ones that don;t fit strictly in the wrap/sheath/a line rule i have really good luck with the brand London Times.

i've been trying to find this one in a store but no luck . too bad i'm not a size 6 yet because i'd get this

with my figure I am very happy that tailored clothes and pencil skirts are back in, as they make the most of my shape, my biggest problem is my boobs are huge and so I find tops an issue, and buying bras in a pain and I have to order from specialist stores and places like La Senza don't make bras for ladies with boobs like mine lol
  • I would hate having no butt or bust! You should be proud of whatever figure you have!

Being an hourglass does have it's problems. I am losing, losing, losing in my waist - aaaaand almost nowhere else. I dig the 39-32-38 measurements, but it's like....body! Consistency, please!

    I hear ya.

Love my shape but agreed, it can be difficult to find nice fitting clothes off the rack, and crappy when you have to buy a size up just to fit your shoulders/bust, and your midsection (aka your best feature to show off) is hidden away, swimming in fabric. To the tailors!

I'd never really hated my figure, but over the years I have grown accustomed to accommodating it. My problems are always 2-pronged. One is as you've attentioned here [outfits for the more slender-figured women] and the other would be the length issue.

My solution from whence my sister advised me, is to purchase a size too big, then get it adjusted [for my designer pieces]

Edited to add: If it's an emergency my sister adjusts it for me, from when she was 11. Were studying abroad; Had loads of Italian designer suits bought by our parents for Church and day-formals ... Adopted "the solution."

Oh I know! That's why I'm so thankful many stores now have plus sized juniors. I still have to get them taken in at the waist, but at least the rise (how far up my body they come) is a better fit for me. Most tailors charge more than the cost of jeans to fix the rise. Taking in at the waist is a simple fix. Pretty soon I'll be able to shop in regular juniors (yay) which will open up a lot of options for me.

When I used to be a pastor's wife, we wore suits all the time. I'd stock up on Kasper/Tahari/etc on sale at Dillards for $25-30 in a large size that fit my bust and hips, and then end up spending $40 at the tailor to make each one perfect in the back and waist. Worth. Every. Cent!! Man I miss that seamstress! She was the BEST!!
