to be over in calories?? I am NEVER over my cal intake but i've inputted only half of what I am having for supper and I am now within 100 cals, but once i add everything else, it's going to put me WAAAAAY over the day and then i have to have a snack tonight...i just don't want to feel so guilty for being over my cals when i've done SO good by ending the day with a lot of cals left

well my only concern is that i am also taking hubby out for his b-day on sat.....however, to ensure we make up for what we will be eating, our plan right now is to take an hr long walk...and then on sunday i have a get together with some friends, where there will be more food.....most of it healthy of course, and i have decided that i will not each too much sunday morning so that i have the cals to eat some snacks on sunday

Being over for one day probably puts you at where your body needs to be to MAINTAIN your current weight, not necessarily gain weight.

Think of the opposite --- If you overate daily but then underate for one single day, would you lose weight? Probably not.

Enjoy dinner and enjoy hubby's birthday!!!

Well, I do hate to break it to you, but in my own life, I can always find some excuse to eat things I shouldn't.
And while I think it's okay for me to splurge occasionally. I could easily slip & say "Well, today I'm going to my friends' house so, there's no hope for today" and then that same week say, "Well, today's a coworker's birthday, so I'll have a big ol' piece of cake in celebration" and then "Well, today's my anniversary with my bf, so we have to go all out for dinner & I have to eat a huge slice of cheesecake" & so on and so on. There's always a reason & you have to learn to make adjustments.

This year, I didn't even use the holidays as an excuse to over eat. In the past, I'd eat a whole box of chocolates or a whole half a batch of cookies in just a few days. This year, each day I ate ONE chocolate and ONE or two cookies & that was my splurge. It just can't be "Wooohooo, today's a special day so I'm going hog wild!" all the time. That's what got me to 270lbs.

Since you're worried about calories you haven't eaten yet, why not modify your dinner and snack so you don't go over? Then you won't have to feel bad, and you'll be one step closer to your goal.

It is a slippery slope indeed. The only way we're going to conquer this is if we stop using every excuse to overeat and overindulge.
  • once i get supper all made, maybe i'll just cut it in half, and take the rest for lunch tomorrow

Sorry, I agree with jlb123 . . . that's what got me where I am too. Plus, even if you are going out, you can still order a little healthier and not go all hog wild . . . choose some healthier options on the menu or split something or get what you really want to eat and only eat half of it. I did the same thing, there are always going to be special events, dinners, eating out that was my problem as well. It just takes retraining your mind to order healthier, eat less of the bad stuff and have a little self control (which I'm also horrible at!!)

However on the other side, I think it IS okay to splurge once in a while, just not using every special occassion as an excuse to splurge. And I also think it's a good idea, if you know you are going to be "bad" one day, to plan on fitting in a little more exercise (which you have done).

Just my two cents . . . Good luck!!

I can assure you, I am NOT making excuses...that's what got me to the weight i am in the first place...that was the OLD me....in the last month, I have had EVERY opportunity to cheat on my diet and just say oh one piece won't kill me.....But I DID NOT do that....i maintained by willpower and motivation.....that is why I have lost these 15lbs in the last 6 weeks or so.....So I am not looking for an excuse to eat a little more at suppertime tonight........i am adding veggies to my supper if anyone was curious.....anyway, all I wanted to know is if one night of eating over my cals was a problem

Except that you continued to tell us that it's not one night. It's tonight, and Saturday and Sunday which led me (and everyone else here) to comment the way I did.

Of course going over on your calories one night isn't going to HELP you. But it's just a tiny drop in the bucket overall. Which is why it's okay to splurge *occasionally.*
  • once i had supper made, i realized there was a lot there, so i just cut it in half and will take the rest for work tomorrow....this way i won't feel so guilty tonight :)

    thanks everyone for the feedback

Sounds like a great idea! I do this at restaurants right away, to save myself in advance. Or I'll order an appetizer (share it) and have a side of the vegetable of the day . . . .

It is a slippery slope if you make continual excuses. However, if you're exercising heavily (burning 800+ calories in cardio and weight training for 30 minutes 3 to 4 times a week) 4 to 5 times a week or more, it IS a good idea to increase your calories by 300 to 500 calories once every 8 to ten days to keep your metabolism super charged. That Cardio doesn't mean just walking, it's pushing yourself HARD. I did this while under the supervision of a personal trainer when I used to powerlift. It was also recommended when my hubby and I worked with a personal trainer two years ago. Let me tell you, the second time around, I was not in nearly good enough shape to do that! I wasn't strong enough yet . . . :(

If you make concessions earlier in the day, to plan for a special time with friends or family . . . .don't avoid those special times, you'll regret it! Enjoy yourself, listen to your tummy. . . .don't over eat just because it's there, especially if you're out . . .

Here's my take. It's all about controlling your food, as opposed to food controlling you. I feel like if you make a plan, stick too it, and know exactly what you are doing, it's ok to have a day every once in a while where you go over.

it's when you have a plan, and for one reason or another you don't follow it where the problem lies (IMHO). So if you are sticking with your diet, and decide consciously to one day go over this month, more power too you, I think that's fine. It's all about creating a lifestyle that you can live with. If that lifestyle includes being "bad" every once in a while to make it a lifestyle you find acceptable and enjoyable, then you should do that!

Will power isn't the act of denying yourself things, it's the ability to generate a plan, and stick to that plan in the midst of adversity. If your plan includes one day of indulgence, then that's fine as far as I'm concerned.
