I was talking to my fiancé today and used an Australian expression that completely confused him. He is English but has been living in Aus for quite some time so I was surprised!

It got me thinking that it would be fun, with the big mix of countries, regions and cultures on MFP to have a "cultural slang game"

Here's how it is going to work.

I'll start by posting a word or phrase and its meaning for my country, and then the next person will post the equivalent for their country, and then add one other word or expression to the list. If you're from the same country as the person above you, add a variation or just use the same again

Example

Person 1
Expression X- Meaning- Country X

Person 2
Expression X equivalent-meaning- Country z
Expression Y-meaning-Country Z

And so on and so forth, lets see how long we can make the list!

    havering - someone with little idea as to what they are talking about " He's haverin"

    am no - im not

    am ur - I am

    aff yer heed - Implying someone is out of their mind

    burd - A female, usually girlfriend, possesive.

    bawhair - a recognised unit of measurement " i was a baw hair away from battering him"

    batter - Fighting with the intent of bodily harm

    breeks - Trousers

    an empty - A party where ones parents are away( tense afairs)

    gowpin - An expression of pain " Bashed mah leg and it was pure gowpin"

    Pure - A word used in front of many words to describe intensity " that was pure mental "as opposed to just mental

    hackit - Ugly

    jakey - An undesirable , smelly , uncouth etc

    jobby - Feces

    pished - Drunk

    steaming - Even more drunk

    Liftit - to get arrested by the police

    How - Why?

    hen - term of endearment for a woman, equivalent to 'love' or 'darling' ("How ye dain the day, hen?")

    Da - father

    Maw - Mother

    bastirt - *kitten*, also a term of endearment "awright Scotty ya wee bastirt"

    Did you know that you can get an app, (that is very awesome), called the nicktionary. It is a Nicki Minaj dictionary -which sometimes, for someone like me who lives Denmark may come in handy - Oh and also, it is just hilarious! :tongue:

    Cranial-rectal-inversion -- someone being stupid (the PC version of "having one's head up one's butt")
