Freeway to 10k

I have been running 30 solid minutes a few days a week for most of this year, but I never seem to be able to motivate myself to increase that to any more than 40 minutes. It's a totally mental barrier, because I'm sweating, but not dying at the end of 40 min. I thought I would try a different tack.
Have any of you done the PodRunner Freeway to 10k interval program? What was your fitness level at the start, and the end?
Today was my first day, and my biggest frustration was actually the recovery intervals - at first, I slow down, but as they go on, I find myself speeding up, and that defeats the purpose a bit. Power walking after less than 15 minutes at a faster pace is tough - I have to really work to hold myself back!
