Sedentary is literally reserved for people who do not do anything at all.

Sorry that is completely wrong! Is you want to use "literal" then sedentary would be seated.

    Definition of sedentary
    adjective
(of a person) tending to spend much time seated; somewhat inactive: we all walk a certain amount every day even if we are sedentary

(of work or a way of life) characterized by much sitting and little physical exercise: a sedentary lifestyle spells bad news for hips and thighs

(of a position) sitting; seated: he spoke from a sedentary position

Can you define your source for this please?

According to MFP, which I assume is the OP's reference:
"Sedentary: Spend most of the day sitting (e.g. bank teller, desk job)"

I took this information from HelloitsDan's In Place of a Road Map, which is a well-respected guide for many people on this site. He claims to not use Sedentary unless you are unable to walk or literally sit in front of a tv all day.

I am not claiming to have all the right answers, but wanted to give my opinion.

Think see if your losing a reasonable amount and feel good keep it as it is. If your feeling weak or lethargic maybe eat more. I have a desk jib but due to typing around 8000+ keystrokes an hour and high stress at work my TDEE comes out higher than I expected on my ki fit / bmf. I increased my cals to 1700 and feel better. I am 215lbs though!

I do all the cooking from scratch and cleaning. Even though I have a desk job I'm regularly on the go for 14 hours. A bmf or ki fit would probably help you.

I am quite active outside of work, but I work at a desk job, and my workouts are sporadic but intense.

I CHOOSE to set my activity level to sedentary so that I know I can log all exercise when I get it, and not have to worry that I'm overeating if I have a slow day.

Are you sedentary? Yes, you likely fit into that pattern.
Should you choose sedentary for MFP reasons... well a lot of incredibly fit people do, just so that it takes the mystery out of...
    - should I log that 10 flights of stairs I did?
    - I walked to the grocery store with the kids, should I log that activity?
    - I just busted my *kitten* cleaning house for the last three hours, should I log it?

If you set yourself to "lump of clay" and then log all your activity, you get a decent idea of calories.

Am I sedentary? No. But I am in my MFP profile. :)

I think I'm going to have to disagree with everyone who posted so far and say that this is "light activity." You are still getting out of bed every day and going to work. You walk a little bit twice a day, and you go home. I'm sure you also run typical errands like most people and you don't sleep all weekend.

Sedentary is literally reserved for people who do not do anything at all.

I have to agree here. Here's what I would do: Set it to "light activity", only log exercise if it is out of your normal routine and you are really breaking a sweat, and eat the limit it gives you. Do it for two or three weeks and see what your weight does. MFP basically gives you 1200 calories for being "sedentary" unless you are pretty large, which is not enough. You might see better results with a smaller deficit.

Incorrect. Lightly active would be someone who is up on their feet for most of the day, like a teacher and such....if you are sitting for the majority of your day, you are sedentary. The OP is for sure Sedentary.

Yeah, it's "sedentary" and as long as your happy with it, go with it.

Your day and mine are similar (office desk job for 8-9 hr a day), but I am hitting the gym for an hour, 3 times a week. Plus (2) 10-15min walks at work and sometimes an additional 30min walk at lunch some days. I consider myself sedentary.

Atleast a month is needed. All depends how your feeling on the numbers your on right now! X

If there was a "check periodically to see if still breathing" category you'd fit into that.

No offense, that describes my typical day too. But yeah it's sedentary, no doubt

Actually it was your post that I found to be particularly negative. Sarcasm is much less subtle than it used to be on the internet. I mean, "check periodically to see if still breathing"? Really?? You're going to say that wasn't implying that sedentary is a bad thing? I get that a lot of people think that adding the words "no offense" makes it okay to say something offensive/negative but c'mon, don't be obtuse. My only point here is that this person is asking for help in setting up their profile so that they can be successful, not for your opinion on their current lifestyle - they're obviously here so that can change.

I am probably more sedentary than someone who is wheelchair-bound and never exercises, no joke. I'f I'm not in the gym I'm pretty much a (seated) statue. To me, itt IS a bad thing, and I am trying to find ways to be more active in my daily life. It's not laziness, it's due to the fact that my current lifestyle doesn't require much movement.

Don't overestimate your activity outside of purposeful exercise, and don't let "sedentary" define you as a person...

I disagree with the sedentary. I'd say you are lightly active.

You guys are saying sedentary like it's a bad thing, for shame!

I must admit, I consider a sedentary lifestyle to be gross and unattractive. I have a bunch of friends in finance and admin that have sit down jobs, but all of them (with the exception of two) also workout 4-6 days a week. The other two at least walk to and from work and their lifestyles are at minimum lightly active.

I dont know if it's 'bad' but, to me, it's like... level one. You dont stay there.

    Yay, an Internet historian!

OP is sedentary. As the dictionary definition stated, sedentary means mostly seated, which is true. As a bonus, the definition also says sedentary is a bad thing. Being a "negative person" doesn't simply mean saying something with the word no in it. There's a dictionary entry for that, too.

I've wondered the same thing about my activity level, and I'm pretty much the same, but I do have 2 kids, and I'm usually moving (making supper, cleaning - someone needs an an autoclean button for my 3 year old - transporting my kids to activities or birthday parties, bathing my youngest, getting the day ready for the next day, "activities" with my hubby when the lights go out..) but I sit at my desk from 8:30-4:30, most days with a 1 hour break in there somewhere, and after the kids are in bed, for the most part, from 8pm-10pm, I'm either on here, or I'm sitting on the couch watching tv.

I'm set to sedentary. If I do a big round of housecleaning (one day, I vacuumed the steps, the couches, the floors, and then mopped), I logged it as light housework. Walking in the mall, if more than an hour, I log it as slow pace walking(2.0), and knock off about 15 minutes. I eat half of those calories back.

I'm wondering if my setting is "right". I'm losing pretty well. In the past week I've changed my goal from 1.5lbs per week to 1lb per week, and that took me from 1200 to 1440 calories per day. I was losing 3lbs every 2 weeks, and this past weigh in I lost 1 pound. I don't know if there would be a difference if I changed it.

At the rate you are losing weight, I would strongly encourage you to keep doing what you're doing. Most people with a lot of weight to lose will see a plateau at some point, so if you're losing weight pretty steadily, enjoy it and don't change a thing

Ok great, thanks!! I figured some day, some time, I may hit a plateau, so if I can get a good head start, I'm ok with that! lol I AM enjoying the boost from 1200 to 1440!! Who knew that was the reason I was so tired and sluggish!

I think on the Road Map he says that for when you're looking at your properly calculated out calories, when that site he recommends gives you a chart at the end to go by. I don't think he meant the MFP setting, since the Road Map recommends against using the MFP settings in the first place and doing the math yourself.

I am not him though, so you could be right! I just did my Road Map today and "fixed" my MFP numbers. :)

I didn't read all the post's but does it matter if it is technically sedintary or not? If you have your calories, your weight loss goals, and log your activity above and beyond whats normal. If you are losing, not hungry all the time, and not tired. Then what you have set up is good. If you are not losing, hungry all the time, and tired then you need to adjust your settings.

Now that is far too sensible!
