working out w/ achilles tendonitis!?

Options
This fall I really increased my time on the elliptical to help offset the amount of sitting in grad school. I gradually developed achilles tendonitis which has been very painful. I am having the HARDEST time staying motivated while working out. The tendonitis pain has been around for almost 2 months now & I have majorly cut down on my exercising in order to rest it (no elliptical, leg lifiting, or treadmill)... resulting in primarily UE, bike, and core (but bike is SO BORING for me, I hate it..)

Any suggestions for more workouts to do that won't irritate my achilles?! This limitation is really hindering my motivation to get to the gym!

thought this link may be helpful to you http://www.drpribut.com/sports/spachil.html. I personally don't have much experience with this, but I know it can be difficult to overcome.

The worst- I am so sorry for you b/c it sucks. =(

I am coming off of a MONTH of no exercise and restricted to a walking cast due to a flare of my Plantar Fascittis and development of Achillis tendonitis. My doctor didn't even allow me to bike or swim- NOTHING! The only time I was allowed to take my cast off was for sleep and showers.

You aren't going to want to hear what I have to say, though it is true. You need weeks off, serious commitment to stretching, an anti inflammatory, and 3X daily elevation/icing/compression. These kind of injuries need time and pampering, particularly if you are mid-flare. If in pain, it means you are inflammed. Motrin won't cut it... you need a prescription, for sure.

    =(

Now that I am back to my workouts I stretch like a fiend, am constantly on ice, sleep in a sock ala http://plantarfasciitistreatment.sinisinc.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/FXT-300x300.jpg, take days off when I am hurting (today), and plunked down $400 to have custom inserts made. Ouch.

Boo, I know. Being restricted from doing what you love SUCKS, but in the longrun- you will be glad you did. I get it though. Sucks having the will but not the way.

Here's my blog, updates about dealing with the issue. Hang in there! If you take care, it won't be long before you are back at what you love...

swim or bike. If the bike is boring get the best play list you find.
