    It's too hot to cook. Dinner at a fried chicken shack that does asian inspired sides. Szechuan aubergine tempura, gong pao wings, miso ginger slaw, beef dripping fries.

    Dinner consisted of stuff that's not too traumatic to cook during a heatwave. Steamed artichokes dipped in lemon butter followed by dutch herring salad made with lightly cured Spanish lomo de bonito we have lying around instead of Dutch brined herring.

    We went back to the South African braai restaurant but ordered less this time. Pickled cucumber salad to start, a couple of chicken skewers, a pork belly skewer, sweet potato curry, wood smoked potato wedges.

    Primi of penne alla vodka. First time I made this American/Italian dish and was surprised that it delivered in terms of releasing flavour compounds from tomato and alliums that are alcohol soluble but not water soluble. If you don't believe me, make your favourite tomato sauce and taste. Then deglaze the pan with a shot or two of vodka, boil off the alcohol and taste again. For me, significantly different.
    Secondi of air fryer pork tenderloin coated in tapaneade and mustard. Sides of warm courgette salad and air fried button mushrooms.

    Lasagna was a successful way to rescue overly dry batch cooked meatballs. Sauteed spinach, roast chestnut mushrooms, Portuguese marinated carrots.
