I have a bad, bad habit of being Dr. Google, MD. I'm always convinced I'm dying of something.

Yea, I have been there and done that. Told my Doctor that I had something wrong with me and didn't know what, he said that I was fine and that my bloodwork was perfect. I continued to come back complaining of low energy, joint and muscular pain, not being able to concentrate, he told me to keep working out that my bloodwork was perfect and to just push through it. Then 6 months later I had a 5 mm kidney stone, which was stuck and had to have surgery to remove. I didn't know they could put that many items up a small hole. The breakdown of the kidney stone was 100% calcium, which led to more tests, which led to the discovery of two growths on my parathyroids. Made things a little more interesting when I notified the Dr. that my aunt died of parathyroid cancer, so I had surgery to remove the bad parathyroids, still have 2 good ones, and I feel so much better. I went through 2 years of hell and not getting anyone to listen to me about how bad I felt, and now I feel great.

I diagnosised my own cervical cancer. Made an appt with the OBGYN about it and proceeded to get a long lecture about google, web md and wasting her time. Needless to say I was fine and merely had a minor issue that required no treatment at all.

I'm not a hypochondriac, but two of my three younger brothers are. One of them is a raging alcoholic though. "I have GOUT" - no you don't, you idiot, it's called alcoholic neuropathy. "I have DIVERTICULITIS/LOSIS" - no again, you're ruining your digestive tract with a diet of 90% 101 proof alcohol and 10% fast food. :noway:

i can see it in my dr.'s eyes that she knows i'm a hypochondriac. i wonder if she's actually notated it. the only thing that keeps me from seeing her as much as i'd like is the $20 copay and "the look" she gives me....with a smile of course.

HOWEVER the one time there was a bump on my hand and i knew for sure it was a blood clot (but not really) and she kept saying something about some kind of bulging vein or something and no biggy. so when it got larger and my hand started feeling funny and cold i went back again A YEAR LATER and she finally sent me to a specialist who scheduled surgery and took that huge blood clot out. yep i was right from the beginning.

the fact that she knows i'm a hyponchondriac makes me not want to go to her sometimes b/c i feel like she doesn't take me seriously....and i'm ALWAYS serious about my sicknesses lol

I'm sorry that it bothers you so much. :( I used to be that way until I was a firefighter/emt, then nursing student. I found out what 'real' problems were compared to my 'fears', if you'd call it that. Since then though, I have found out I have high blood pressure, a cyst in my brain, a kidney tumor and a kidney stone. LOL I am fine though. :)

Life is short, and it's not worth fighting those fears. If it bothers you more than just the occasional Dr.s appt., get help for it. There is nothing wrong with asking to fix a chemical imbalance in your brain, no more than if you broke a toe. I'm not saying you NEED a Dr., not saying you NEED meds or not saying you NEED therapy either. So don't panic. Just know help is there if you Do need it. :)

    Good luck! <hugs>

I'm the exact opposite of a hypochondriac, I will go without going to the doctor for something that I SHOULD go to the doctor to all because I'm afraid I'm acting like a hypochondriac.

My mother is a hypochondriac. Severe. She was a RN for 25 yrs, so it's weird that she has always been a hypochondriac.

Anyway, I've seen her through some REAL medical issues and I've seen her go through some very NOT real medical issues.

I'm too aware of her being a hypochondriac that I don't go to the doctor unless a limb is hanging off my body )this has never happened).
