spinning/cycling calories

For those of you that do spinning classes, how do you calculate your calories burned. I dont see a spinning option on here, I used another website and entered my weight and mins and for 60 mins it said 902. That seems really high. Sadly I dont have a HRM yet, I am pretty sure there is one in my stocking :) yippee

My HRM says anywhere between 600 and 800 (tops - that happened just a few times). I'm 5'4 138 lbs.

I generally burn 300 to 400 per hour on my road bike.

For me, spinning is ~8 cals per minute... road biking is ~11 cals per minute, mountain biking is ~12 cals per minute

    Calculated with an HRM.

For you... take a step back and look at it big picture. Spinning is a cardiovascular exercise. Think about other cardio exercises that you expend about the same effort for the same amount of time. Then see what the calorie burn estimate is for that exercise and log that number.

Cardio is cardio... it's the time and the workload that matter.

I use my hrm and spinning 45 min = 430 - 450. I enter it as stationary bike, vigorous effort, 30 min, it shows as 433 calories burned.
  • it depends on the class.

in my class that I teach we burn up to 800 calories cause for most of the class we have the tension up at the heighest it can go. we only lower it at the start of climbs then we boost it back up to the heighest.

but other classes it about 400-500

heart rate monitor is the best way to know for sure.

During my 1 hour spin class last weekend my HRM said I burned 1100 calories. My heart rate was between 80 and 90% for most of the class.

    I am 5'6" and 220 lbs.

I log about 500 calories for 60 minutes of high resistance, high intensity intervals on my HRM. This is low compared to what the machine gives me (around 600-700)

    I'm 5'1 and 110

it definately depends on the class when it comes to spinning.. I've learned that no ride is the same. I really hope you have been good so that you find a HRM in your stocking, for it will come in handy during spinning class. Our classes are 45-60min and depending on the teacher I burn from 600-800calories..

I use a Garmin Forerunner HRM. Then use this formula:

    The Journal of Sports Sciences provides a calorie expenditure formula for each gender. Men use the following formula: Calories Burned = [(Age x 0.2017) -- (Weight x 0.09036) + (Heart Rate x 0.6309) -- 55.0969] x Time / 4.184. Women use the following formula: Calories Burned = [(Age x 0.074) -- (Weight x 0.05741) + (Heart Rate x 0.4472) -- 20.4022] x Time / 4.184.

    Calculation
    Let your age be 32 years and let your weight be 173 lbs. for this example. You're male and your average heart rate during a 37-minute exercise session was 133 bpm. Your calorie expenditure during this exercise session was [(32 x 0.2017) -- (173 x 0.09036) + (133 x 0.6309) -- 55.0969] x 37 / 4.184 = 174 calories.

I subtract out an approximate # of calories I would have burned just sitting on my *kitten* in the same period of time. done and done.

Spinning is in the cardiovascular database - I use it a lot.
    Spinning®

I use a HRM. 800 calories in an hour yesterday. That's pushing it hard (up to max training heartrate), 600/hour is a a pretty brisk ride for me (80% max training heartrate).
