Are they worth the money and if so which ones are the best?

It's a supplement. So if you have trouble getting enough protein then you can have one. I use it for the convenience but they are not required by any means. I believe they are worth the money too. It's one of the few supplements I take. Also, there is NO best, just the one you like the most.

Ideally, I prefer one that has both casein and whey protein like EAS. But I also like muscle milk (especially while bulking since it's higher in calorie) and Body Fortress.

If you're following specific macros then its definitely worth it. Its the easiest way to get protein without going over set goals.

THey can be worth the money if you don't get enough protein from your daily diet.

    I use two versions...

BOdy Fortress Chocolate which I use to mix into baking, make protein bars, etc.

Muscle Maxx Vanilla which I use for smoothies and I add to my morning coffee.

Both are great additions since I don't get enough protein from my diet.

It can be tough to find one you like... some have an odd taste to them.

I like to make my own. You have to be careful you get the kind that is low sugar (5g or less). Typically what I do is the chocolate-flavored whey protein (you can get this from any grocery store, again just watch your sugar content), mix with skim milk or water. If you are using as a meal replacement and need some carbs, throw in a half cup of raw oats, flax seed for more filling. I will also throw in a scoop of PB2 for flavor.

They should supplement a balanced diet not substitute for it - whey protein shakes are a great convenience snack for when you cannot eat immediately you finish a workout (ideally within 20 minutes for fastest repair/ refuel). However you will not achieve hypertrophy if your diet or exercise regime is a mess, you need to eat enough total calories over five or six meals each day, get in a balance of protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins.

And do the right exercises with the right technique at the right intensity - when you start out forget isolation exercises, just do compound moves to boost growth hormone production, slow six second lifts, great technique with full (safe) range of movement to failure on every set, no momentum, no using gravity or your bodyweight to cheat.
