P90X at the gym

My gym will be offering p90x starting in January but I can't decide if I want to go for it or not. I have about 10 pounds I want to lose, but decreasing my body fat is the real goal. Trip to Mexico in March and would like to feel better in my swimsuit.

Classes will be 6 days a week. I know I will have to miss occasionally, including a part of a week inFebruary and a week in March. It's not the dvds, but group workouts with a p90x certified trainer. The cost is $399 for the first 15 people who sign up and $499 after that.

Should I go for it? It's a lot of money but I'm sure it would get results.

    Go for it!

I have a friend who did the videos at home and so far she's dropped 15+ pounds. She did a modification on the nutrition plan that they give you with the videos but she still dropped a lot of weight and inches. She's actually going to do it again after the holidays.

I get that you're going to have to miss a few classes. I just started Insanity and there are a few days I'm going to miss but I think the results will still be good.

Why not just do it at home for less? On your schedule when it works for you?

    Just asking

    You won't be disappointed... I know, I wasn't!

Personally, I think I'd rather buy the DVDs and do the P90x workouts at home. Even if you don't have the equipment already, your cost for the 90 days will probably be less buying the gear and DVDs.

I'd be a little concerned that the trainer you're going to get at the gym isn't as good as the instruction you'd get on the DVD. Maybe you'll get some personal attention in the gym that you can't get from the video, but if the class is going to be 20+ people there probably won't be a huge amount of individual interaction.

Either that, or consider free weights. Picking up heavy things does wonders.

For $400 you could buy the DVDs on ebay and all weights you would ever need and have plenty of money left over. That's the route I would go. I haven't completed the whole program, but it was effective.
  • I did it at home and definately got great results. That's a lot of money. if you are disciplined, I would say do it at home and save a lot of money. Also, if you do it at home, maybe you have access to a lap top and you can take your videos with you when you are out of town.

Good luck whatever your choice.. I loved it!! I actually did p90x2

$399 seems kind of high for a class on top of a gym membership.

I’m not sure a gym can teach P90X because of the copy right laws unless the $399 is the work out and a copy of a personal P90X DVD Set?

For me that would be perfect. I find it easier to do something when I am in the environment. Plus doing it with other people would be really cool. I say go for it, sounds like a blast.

Agreed on doing it your self. The only thing you have to worry about is actually doing it. Where at the gym you have the motivation to keep it up. But then again you need the motivation to go to the gym.

I say buy the DVD and equipment and use the extra money to buy a bunch of great swim suits...to show off to us.

Its up to you. Doing it at home will cost less and it can travel with you if you want. Doing it at the gym might provide good motivation to stick with it by being with a group of people and you might push yourself harder than you ever would at home.

Personally I would buy the DVDs and do it at home. The benefits at home are you can do the exercise anytime you want. You don't have to make sure you are free to attend the class. It is also very expensive at the gym. $500 is not worth it to me. I would prefer to buy the DVDs and have them available to me anytime.

For less than $300 you can buy the DVDs, a new workout outfit and all the weights/bands you would need for the program.

If you are leaning towards doing the gym program due to the others and the motivation they may give you, find a buddy or two (or three) here. There are tons of people on MFP doing that program and I'm sure you could find a few who would help to motivate you and keep you accountable provided you do the same for them.

Are you going to do it every single day of the week? I have a lot of disposable income but damn, I don't think a $90 program gains an extra $400 in value for having someone watch you do it

How fit are you to begin with? If you do decide to join the program, what's the policy on injuries? Would you get a refund for the months you weren't able to do it in the event you got hurt? I ask because it's a lot of $$ to spend and I would want to be sure I could get the unused months back if I couldn't complete the program. I wouldn't join if that wasn't an option. My husband and I both did P90X...I was a D1 athlete in college and we both came away from P90X with injuries. That's not the program's fault - we just pushed too hard too quickly.

I would go the DVD route - you can do it anytime you want to and as many rounds as you want to for much less $...and, if you get injured like we did, you can always come back to it later. That's why I asked about your fitness level now - if you're already kicking butt, you may be less likely to get hurt, but if it would be a big step up in activity for you, don't be afraid to start slowly!

Doing P90X in the gym is kind of a waste because if you have access to actual gym equipment there are so much better things you can do. P90X is structured the way it is because it was designed to make do with less equipment. But with access to things like a squat rack, a bench, and other such things, no offense but going to the gym to do P90X is like driving a Lamborghini to a Volkswagen dealership to eyeball the new Jetta. It's simply not efficient compared to the other things you can do at the gym, and it can't produce the same caliber of results as long as you make a schedule and STICK TO IT. Look into something like Stronglifts 5x5 or Athlean-X for something more geared toward making use of actual gym equipment that will produce even better results.

EDIT: The way P90X was designed, they cut a lot of corners when it came to exercise selection because they had to keep two things in mind:

    1. They had to make use of the limited equipment your average home user might have

    2. They had to limit themselves to exercises that gave you a choice between using bands OR dumbbells.

A program designed to make use of heavier weights, gym equipment, and doesn't make these compromises WILL give better results, guaranteed.

Just wanted to comment on the quality of the gym P90X trainer. Beachbody introduced the P90X Trainer certification program less than a year ago to the Coach community. Interested people had to undergo a weekend long certification class and live presentation of their P90X skills in order to become certified so if the gym is marketing this as taught by a certified P90X trainer then you can be sure that person has not only gone through P90X themselves as a user (probably multiple rounds worth) but he/she has also gone through a rigorous process to achieve the designation...plus it cost the person money to go through the process.

    Thanks for the thoughts, everyone.

I'm still on the fence. I know the dvds would be cheaper, but I haven't been disciplined about working out at home for a long time. The structure and group of the gym could be nice. But it is pretty expensive.

Why would you go to a gym to do p90x? and pay for it? I know classes can be fun, but you can get a much better weight lifting routine for free if you have access to the gym

many people benefit from the group experience

whether it be yoga or zumba or spin and I imagine P90X

working out with others your pace and intensity can be increased tremendously by the motivation of the group experience

    something to consider

I do agree, that's why I said group classes can be fun.

But I think its silly to pay to do p90x at a gym, when it would have been designed so much more differently if it was being done at a real gym.

And I did 3 rounds of p90x. I to be real honest with you, I should have stopped after the 1st round and "upgraded" to a gym routine. I was really limiting my development.

ya...one round is probably enough if you then move on to a good free weight routine

as with anything...you just gotta do it

My brother-in-law did it with a group and saw great results. I think it was a good experience because he likes people and enjoyed the bonding. If your more of a people person then go ahead, do it at the gym. I'm a little more reserved and can push myself so I did it home.

I feel you know the answer to your inquiry in your heart. Just go for it and don't look back.

I'd personally save the money and just do it at home. Plus I didn't think gyms could have group sessions and charge that because of copyright laws.
