Couch Surfing

Hey everyone, I apologize for the non fitness topic. I did a quick search for this, but didn't see anything.

I was hoping to generate some chit chat regarding couch surfing. I know very little about it, but I've heard it is a great way to meet kind and considerate folks all around the world. My girlfriend and I are very eager to travel and see as much as we can. There is so very much we want to experience and see with our own eyes inside and outside the US of A, but unfortunately lodging never seems to fit into our budget. We also think it would be neat to offer our place to those who find themselves in the same position. Has anyone out there ever experienced couch surfing or know someone who has? If so, it would be cool to hear about your experiences or the experiences of someone you know. What site did you or your friend use? How did you or your friend gain and lend people's trust on the best couch surfing sites? Any advice would be very much welcomed.

(Always looking to make some new friends if my profile appeals to you.)

Thanks

I have a friend who does it - it seems to work out great. He has hosted and surfed........loves it. Most of the people don't stay in touch, but he has made a couple of friends.
  • Sorry dude. Only one couch at my house. Your wife is welcome to stay though.

    Classy

Well I certainly think it is a Classy Couch. Fits our decor. Of course she would have to move all the damn pillows to sleep on it.

I spent a year living in Germany, and couch-surfed in Rome, Naples, and Marrakech. My boyfriend has also hosted some couchsurfers who were visiting from Uruguay and Iceland.

Overall, it was a postiive experience. On the plus side, I got to see things that tourists probably wouldnt. On the down side, sleeping arrangements could be uncomfortable (Italy was cold and the heating was broken). As a woman, I would never do it alone, so I would travel with a friend and couch surf together. There were also small inconveniences, such as not having a key to come and go as you please (understandable that the host wouldn't want to give random strangers a key, though). It took coordination. Sometimes it was also harder to sleep, because you're in the living room and people are walking around and using the bathroom/kitchen.

On the plus side, the guy in Rome invited some of his Italian friends over for dinner. One girl taught us how to make crepes, and another girl shared her mom's homemade pasta sauce from Sicily. The host in Naples took us to some local places (my first ska concert!), and ordered the best pizza ever for dinner. Another girl took us shopping in the local market. Still have that handbag that I bought!

Personally, I will be staying at hostels going forward. I liked couch surfing, but I also like to sleep comfortably.
