Two Tools...

I love tools (both in the literal and figurative sense, smile!) I came across two nutritional tools that are amazing and wanted to pass them on. Both relate to eating out (one of my downfalls).

The first is a nutrional service called Diet1 where you can text message (to 34381) the name of the restaurant and the food, and they will immediately respond with the nutrional breakdown (calories, fat, carbs and protein). Not bad... It's free as long as you have text messaging service with your phone (I have unlimited - so no problem for me! lol). I texted the following: "macaroni grill steak salad" and it returned the following:

Romano's Macaroni Grill
Steak Ugula Salad with Dressing
Cal: 990
Fat: 80g
Carb: 9g
Prtn: 53g

I guess I shouldn't have eaten the whole thing, sigh. Oh well - next time I will avoid this pitfall by checking the cals before I order, lol. Anyways, you can get more info here:
http://www.diet.com/mobile/

The second is a website called: http://healthydiningfinder.com/site/
It has an ABC list of restaurants with specific menu items that are "healthy" - really helps narrowing the field when eating out.

Does anyone else have nifty tools to share??

  • A good web site to go on is www.dietfacts.com. Not only can you find nutritional information and serving sizes for restaurant foods but also nutritional information for brand name foods as well.

I love the text messaging tool. I will have to call my cell phone provider and change my plan but it is so worth it. Thanks for the info. Sorry I have nothing else to contribute.

I thouhgt this was way cool but now I'm a bit concerned. I sent Pizza Hut pepperoni personal pan pizza to Diet1 and they sent back the following information.

Pizza Hut 6 Personal Pan Pizza - Pepperoni
    Cal:170
    Fat: 8g
    Carb : 18 g
    Prtn: 7 g

Then I went to the Pizza Hut website (www.pizzahut.com) and they say a 6" pepperoni personal pan pizza has the following:

    Cal: 640
    Fat; 29
    Carb: 67
    Prtn: 28

Guess I was supposed to be smart enough to know that Diet1 was telling me that 1/4 of the personal pan pizza had that many calories? Seems a bit misleading when I didn't specify anything other than a whole personal pan pizza. After all who eats only 1/4 of a personal pan?

Neat idea, just be careful of the accuracy of the information.......

Still thanks for sharing. I can definitely see the application of this.
