100 years ago the New York Times declared this woman to be the "most nearly perfect speciman of womanhood". After comparing hundreds of bodies, she was found to most closely resemble the Venus de Milo.
What do you think? What is your perfect female speciman?

This topic merits a pic of the old gal.

And she wasn't afraid to take a beating when she got out of line, based on that eye shading.0

That is the thing - this picture is what a healthy strong tall woman should look like. With all the overweight women in our society it is strange that we idealize underweight / under muscled women.0

my guess is that the woman in the article has a body fat percentage in the unhealthy range.0 -
Laces, doesn't mean she is in the unhealthy range...i'm 5'8 and if I go under 165-170, i'm too skinny. Her waist measurement is great for her height.
I prefer strong to skinny anyway.0 -
She was in the BMI Overweight range. But BMI is so inaccurate and there's no way of knowing how much fat/muscle she had. With those measurements at that height and that weight, she was probably fairly muscled.0

this is comparing apples to oranges. there are lots of reasons why a chunky woman would be considered ideal 100 years ago, especially since her weight and ability to have a bit more cushion signified wealth and a comfortable life.0

Mostly interesting how few of you found her attractive, yet the Venus de Milo is considered such a feminine ideal.0

Too big for my taste0

well lets think about this venus de milo was created in ancient greece. It is supposed to represent Aphrodite who is the goddess of love and fertility. My guess is it's not so much about weight, but the definition of true fertility.
Here is a fun little image for you at one time when we were still killing animals with sharpened obsidian this little sculpture represented the image of fertility in women.
