Step Up?

I have a question about step ups....How fast are you supposed to step up and back down? As fast as you can go, average pace or slower? The reason why I'm asking is because I know some exercises you have to go slow to build resistance and strength so I'm not sure? I can go fast, but is that not the way to do it? I've seen several answers...sorry if it's a stupid question. Thanks!
