Eat correctly for your level of activity with a realistic deficit, so your body doesn't feel so threatened and make it so hard.

Did you select the 1 lb recommended loss goal?

Did you select the activity level honestly?

Are you eating back exercise calories to keep that loss goal to only 1 lb?

    So it's pretty simple really.

Going lower worked for a little while - now you've wasted months of time and effort and probably stress which doesn't help.

    Do you go lower still?

Or do you go higher, but still enough to lose reasonably by choice, not by force because the body refuses.

Based on lcd statement, i am gonna say eat more. Sadly, too many people under eat.... especially women as many over extend their weight loss goals. Once you provide answers to bales question we can proceed.

But here is the norm... the OP will state they are eating 1200 calories or less a day and doing 6-7 days of cardio. They dont believe in eating back the exercise calories as they feel it is counter intuitive to their thought on weight loss. We then suggest dropping cardio to 2-3 days a week, doing weight training (like heavy weights ) and a moderate deficit (around 1700-1800 calories) and adjusting macros to around 40/40/20 c/p/f to allow for better nutrition. Does this sound about right? Also, i am not trying to be rude.. please dint take it that way.

I did the same thing for several months! Would lose some and then NOTHING. Gain a little back.........lose a little..........then nothing. Same cycle over and over with the same few lbs! What I have found that is working for me (and its more cals than MFP tells me to eat) is......

Go to www.thefitgirls.com and enter in your info to find out your BMR and TDEE.

Then, eat just above your BMR or a little higher if you wish but don't go over your TDEE. Your TDEE will be higher or lower depending on your activity level. Your deficit is your TDEE minus your BMR. Your end of the week deficit "tally" divided by 3500 should be your approximate lbs lost.

Just an idea. It's working great for me and I'm eating more too!
  • So far you have some good advice here. If you're exercising and not adding enough calories to cover what you're burning then you will never loose the pounds. You must increase to continue fueling the new lean muscle that you're building.

Set your account to 1 lb per week and lightly active. Adjust your macros to 35% carbs, 40% protein and 25% fats. You will probably be around 1500-1600 calories and actually eat that much. In a month, your body will adjust and weight loss will happen.

And what are you comparing that 1200 to in order to think that if you ate more you'd gain?

Wouldn't that be a sad state to end up with, if literally that's all you could eat or you would gain.

Could you imagine your self falling off the wagon easily, and every single splurge meal or vacation actually makes you fat.

Don't go there, meaning, don't make your metabolism go there by continuing to do what you are doing.

    Follow PSULemon's advice.

Oh, and really think about what your standard diet used to be before you started logging or trying to eat less.

Go log some foods on a date before you joined MFP, and really put in several days of the common things you would eat.

Now - does 1200 really sound that high?

You have to find what works for you, but don't let people scare you into eating more than you want to eat. You won't ruin your metab if you eat less, your body won't hold onto the fat if you eat low calories, you won't go into starvation mode if you eat less than 1200 calories. I am NOT saying eat less, that's not what I'm getting at, but it boggles my mind when people say there is no way you can lose weight eating under 1200 or because your so far under what you should be eating that your body is fighting you and holding onto the fat. It's BS of course. I'm two weeks away from my anniversary date of my new life style and my stats don't lie. But they work for me, you have to find what works for you. You may need to eat more, I don't know try it and find out, but don't be afraid to lower them if you need too. I started out on January 2, 2012 eating 1000 or less a day, I'm still eating 1000 or less day and with amazing results. I feel really healthy, I have tons of energy, I'm NOT cranky and I'm not lacking anything in my diet or my life, with the exception of 155 lbs gone from this body. Slow is probably better as far as extra skin and stuff goes, but not because it will ruin my metab or because my body will go into starvation mode, if I go any faster. Find what works for you and just do it. I can tell you that you need to give up as much processed foods as you can. They are horrible for you and you'll feel much better once you get all that out of your system. I've given up sugar also and only get it with my fruit.
    I wish you good luck.

You may be one of those folks who cannot do low cal and instead must do low carb/very low fructose. I had so much difficulty losing a single pound until I got a book called, "The Fat Switch" by cardiologist, Richard J. Johnson, M.D. See my thread posted this evening on the book and how to deal with "The Sugar Monster". I would recommend getting the book as well. It is a bit technical on the bio-chemistry of body fat production but the main thrust is dealing with fructose in our diets (table sugar is 50% fructose).

If you eat 1,000 calories of carbs/sugar and someone else eats 1,000 calories of protein. You both burn 2,000 calories a day. Where does the energy come from?

It has to come from burning your fat stores or catabolizing your lean body mass. But the biochemistry of fat storage and fat use is not as simple as some here make it out to be (and it is almost always men). Men do not have to deal with the effect of estrogen (estrogen hoards fat) so they might actually take some energy from their fat stores. Of course, they may also take some from their muscles as well if they insist on eating sugar and drinking alcohol (which is treated in much the same way that sugar is treated in the body).

You don't have very much weight to lose, so you need to make your calorie deficit as slim as possible to realize a weight loss, say 15-20% under your TDEE.

The same thing happened to me when I first started here, but I went months without losing any weight. Once I adjusted my calorie consumption up to about 1500 and increased my protein and reduced my carbs, the weight started coming off.

I've been pretty pleased with the results, so far. I'm trying a new tactic in an attempt to add more muscle by increasing my fat intake, especially saturated fats. We'll see how that works out...:indifferent:

Essentially, its the total amount of calories you burn in a day through your metabolism, daily life stuff and exercise. This is the number that you can not gain fat until its exceeded. My bmr is 2080, i have a desk job and workout and burn 500 calories per workout. My tdee is:

    = 2080*1.2+500= 2996

This means its impossible for me to gain fat until its exceeded. I say fat, not weight because your water weight can fluctuate based on carb intake and natural fluctuations. Most women are over 2000 calories. So if your account is set to 1 lb and you eat 50% of your exercise calories then its impossible to gain new fat. Now you may gain a few lbs until your body stabilizes and your rmr adjust to its normal functioning level but its only water weight. And as a reference point, every women i have run numbers for and helped set up a diet plan are eating 1700-2100 calories while cutting. Dont be afraid of calories.. see them as fuel.
