Beautiful Cranberry-Orange Sorbet!
Today I tried this cranberry-orange sorbet recipe, which I found on the blog Sidewalk Shoes (http://www.sidewalkshoes.com/2008/11/cranberry-orange-sorbet.html), but which comes originally from David Lebovitz' book "Perfect Scoop: Ice Creams, Sorbets, Granitas, and Sweet Accompaniments." It's beautiful, and the soft sorbet was delicious before it went in the freezer to harden up! Here's the recipe and some photos of the process in case you want to try it. I've also included an MFP recipe card below for nutritional information. If you still have a bag of cranberries hanging around in your fridge, try some sorbet!
2 cups of fresh cranberries
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
grated zest from 1 orange
1 1/2 cups orange juice
1 Tablespoon Grand Marnier or Cointreau (I used Cointreau)
Heat the cranberries, water, sugar, and the orange zest in a non-reactive pan until the liquid starts to boil. Boil for 1 minute, remove the pan from the heat, cover it, and let it sit for 30 minutes.
Pass the cranberries through a food mill, or puree them in a blender and then strain the puree through a sieve to remove large pieces of cranberry skin. Stir in the orange juice and the liqueur.
Chill then freeze in your ice cream maker according to it's instructions.
Here it is after freezing! I think the liquor kept it from getting as hard as it would otherwise, but it seemed uniformly smooth, so I decided to turn it out into a bowl and stick it in the freezer for a while.
I'm taking it to a family party today, so hopefully everyone else likes it as much as I do! Here's the recipe card (I admit, I eyeballed the number of servings; I'm not sure of the exact volume after freezing):
On a side note, if you've thought about getting an ice cream maker and you're not sure whether you'd use it - get it! You can make so many different delicious frozen treats! And since you control the ingredients and the yield, you can whip up a healthy, everyday treat, or a once-in-a-while indulgence. Anyone else have any ice cream or sorbet recipes they're willing to share?

It was a hit at the party - glad everyone here liked the photos! It has a great taste, sweet at first and with that sour-bitter cranberry aftertaste. I'll post some more tasty frozen treats, because I'm sure I'm going to make some soon. I'll probably reprise last year's grapefruit sorbet since I have a bunch of citrus right now, and I might try some new recipes if they look good!0
