Took a big leap off the machines and out of the gym and started c25k yesterday. I've never been a runner no matter how good of shape I was in. It's hard and I like it, but I can already feel the shin splint impending doom. So far, I take my dog with me and we do the trail at the dog park so it may just be that I need trail shoes. Any tips for a serious running beginner?

Hi! Well, I'm no expert at running, am only really a beginner myself BUT here's the advice I've been given or worked out for myself!

    - always always always warm up with a walk and after the run do at least 5 minutes of slow paced walking, that has really helped relieve my shin splints and prevents them too.
    - if you do get shin splints, then when you're relaxing keep them elevated and alternate cold and heat to sooth them
    - take at least a day to rest between each run so your body can recover
    - you should also do like squats and lunges to to strengthen your leg muscles!

    Good luck :)

I've been running for just over a year now. I heart running.

    * if you are starting to get shin splints go slower.
    * Don't push through the pain, it could make it worse.
    * There are stretches to help with the pain
    * There are also exercises to help with gaining strength in you shins/ankles (think monkey toes, but with weights).

    Good luck either way.
