Gaining weight whilst on maintenance? HELP

I have reached a weight of about 123lbs and I am happy, so I decided to maintain. I have only been doing it for about a week and have only been increased my calories by 100 and I still went out running three times. I stood on the scales this morning and it said I had gained a pound and I just don't understand how? Although I feel I should note that I have felt extremely bloated for a few nights in a row and I weigh early in the morning. Any ideas/solutions? Thanks.

It's entirely possible that the bloating caused the extra pound. It's also pretty typical to see a temporary weight gain while changing to maintenance. Basically, keep on doing what you're doing, and see what the scale says a month from now.

First off congratulations on reaching maintenance and feeling happy with it :)

The gain could be anything to do with TOM (I'm assuming you're a girl with the low weight), sodium, water weight for muscle repair, the temporary weight of upping cals also it could be food weight especially if you weigh very early - I noticed this when I went from weighing from 7.30am to 4.30am (changed time I got up as my OH changed shifts) I wouldn't worry about it - just keep doing what you're doing stick to the 100 calorie more until the weight evens out before you up again (if you need too)

Good luck with maintenance, it scares the life out of me, so much so I lowered my original goal :)

    Two key things here:

" I have only been doing it for about a week" - be patient! Give your new routine a month.

" I had gained a pound" - big deal frankly! Your weight can fluctuate by 3lb a day perfectly naturally. It won't be fat. Do you know how many calories there are to a pound of fat?

Well done on reaching your ideal weight - be happy!!

Congrats on getting to your goal and starting maintenance!

I have been on maintenance about a month and weight daily. I record once a week. My weight seems to fluctuate up and down between 128.2 and 130.7... but most days it is 129.0 give or take 1/2 a pound.

I weigh at the same time every day.

As I add calories, it seems like it is better to add vegetables and maybe an extra piece of raw fruit than it is to add salty things.

This. You will never stay the exact same weight week to week or even day to day most of the time.

One of the big things when it comes to maintenance is that it's entirely possible to see the scales go up. Like sijomial said, your weight can fluctuate daily.

But this is also a part of the mentality associated with maintenance. You need to remember you'll have good weeks and bad weeks, just the same as while you were losing weight. However, while on the "losing" track, this would be reflected in losing more or less in a week. Now that you're at maintenance, your "bad" weeks will show an increase and you'll likely have "good" weeks where your weight dips lower. (I've actually lost 7 lbs while doing "maintenance".)

It's like driving on a road. You may be saying in your mind "I'm driving straight on a straight road" when you're really making slight corrections to the left or rightand the road is likely making shifts of its own. When driving, the important thing is to stay in your lane and not keep going to one side or the other. When watching your weight, the important thing is to make sure you stay in the "zone" and that you don't go too far one direction or the other.

you won't maintain a number, you will maintain a range...

You said you're happy with 123? Maybe say "I am happy with 120-125", or whatever range works for you. Weigh once a week, if it is not in that range, think about tweaking your eating just a tad, then weigh again next week.

Also, it could just be poop.

I've been maintaining for 2 years now and my weight varies within a 5 lb range. My goal is to not go over or under that variance but anything in between is fine. You'll never hold exactly on a weight forever and you'll drive yourself crazy trying.
  • Thanks everyone! I think I just got a little freaked what with it coming up to Christmas and all :)
