Let me start off by explaining my situation.

Saturday we went to a Christmas celebration at my sister's and before we went there we went to see my mother at the hospital. My mother was not all there she had literally lost her mind. She knew nothing. She did not know how long she had been at the hospital, what day it was, why she was there, my 8 yr old (red hair) with my 5 yr old son (blonde hair) apart, My niece and nephew were confused. She could not stick to one conversation for to long. My sister and I believe that she would do a lot better going on a diet and losing some of the weight.

A little background on her before all this. She smoked a pack plus a day. Drinks nothing but pepsi 24/7. Eats junk food all the time. Does not make any of her meals. She grabs what she can get her hands on and that is it. We found out that the issue was that she has amonia and that is causing her brain to be confused and taking a tole on her mentality. She has a lot of water weight in her legs and is hardly able to walk.

Now here is my question we are going to start her on the diet but need to know what kind of exercises she can do while sitting? If you could please help me out here I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again,
Athena

Very bizarre. Get a list from her physical therapist. If she is prescribed exercise, and she has bben hospitalized, she should get a referral to a physical therapist If she doesn't get a referral - ask for one.

Good luck. I hope she sees the danger in her current situation and decides to change. It has to come from her.

We told her that we want her up her to stay with us so we can get her headed in the right direction. She also had us scared to death as well as my 11 year old nephew.

I'm going out on a limb here and saying - good luck trying to change her. You have an uphill battle on your hands if you are going to try to separate her from her junk food and Pepsi.

I really hope she gets the point.

^ Exactly this. We could give you a whole list of exercises...but we don't really know her exact physical condition and limits. It would be best to consult her doctor and a physical therapist.

shouldn't she really stay in the hospital? Why is she there in the first place?
  • If she is that disoriented, the hospital may be the best place for her right now. It sounds like they need to get her ammonia levels under control before anything. She needs the be able to understand what's going on. After you know she is mentally sound, I would just talk to the doctors and see what they recommend. I'm sure your mother has heard it before though. Kudos for trying, but it may be one of those things she will have to do own her on own at her own pace. Never hurts to encourage though. Good luck.

My mother had similar symptoms and disorientation from ammonia when she was in liver failure and was in septic shock. They gave her something to temporarily clear it out of her system, but without her liver functioning, it only worked once.

I wish you all the best. You can't change someone who doesn't want to change. Take comfort in knowing you tried to convince her to change her ways, and then let yourself off the hook. She has to want it for herself and changes now may not make any difference.

She got out yesterday. She is doing better and more alert but she is really unsteady on her feet. My cousin dropped her off at home and she fell right when she got there.
  • There is a program that is called "sit and be fit" you can google it and see what you think. Good Luck
