Short term liquid diet?

What are your thoughts on jump starting a long term diet or life style change with a 3 to 7 day "liquid diet"?

I've been hearing a lot about it and decided to do some reading.

What are your opinions? Have you or someone you know tried it?

Pros VS. cons?

I think it is best to start with a lifestyle change. Eat less move more., there is no magic fix or jump start. Happy Holidays.!

I've seen far more still trying to figure out how this weight loss thing actually works months after their cleanse/detox.

How would it be a lifestyle change unless you plan to only do liquids for life?

If those liquids include protein, fat, fruits ve,getables and sufficient calories then its fine. But I have no idea how pre-digesting food with a blender is helpful unless it's a mental thing.

You have a baby in your avi - are you breast feeding?

I any event, I think they are a bad idea in general, but an even worse idea if you are breast feeding.

My sister in law was put on a brief liquid diet due to her weight. Other than that I don't know much about it. Personally, I would forgo the trouble and just eat less/watch what you eat/ work out more.

Fads don't work long term and as soon as you start eating again, the weight will come right back on. Your intestines are approximately 30 feet long and hold a LOT of 'stuff'.

Start right now. Go for a short walk. Have your holiday dinners. On Dec 26th, go for another walk or start doing some other exercise, especially something you ENJOY and will do again. Don't go gung ho and do it so hard that you dont want to do it again the next day. You can add intensity and time later. Re-evaluate your eating habits. Keep moving. Repeat.

Small changes that you can stick with for life work for life! You can do this on your own and do it in a healthy way!

    Good luck and <hugs>

I don't want to sound pedantic, but just so we're all clear, this does not in any way "jump start your metabolism"...and I can not see the connection between drinking your meals for a few days and learning to eat right.

How would it affect one's metabolism?

As far as I know, food and exercise are pretty much the primary drivers for metabolism changes. Don't see how not eating would help. Also not sure how not eating would help someone learn to eat "right".

It does absolutely nothing to jumpstart your metabolism. All they usually do is give you low calories that are lacking in macro and micronutrients. How does a VLCD, drinking your calories start you eating right?

While I understand the vernacular, I don't understand the concept. We are not cars or computers. You don't "jump start" your metabolism - you start eating right and exercising and your body responds accordingly. You don't "reboot" your system or your cravings/tastes like turning a computer off and back on - it's not like you can magically blank out your whole prior life and all of a sudden start fresh by starving yourself for a week. Quick gimmicks/fixes aren't the answer - they're not sustainable and they're not effective. Sooner or later you're going to have to develop the self-discipline to stick to a sustainable lifestyle change if you want lasting results. Why not start that way instead of wasting time with fads?

Same thing as herbal life, slim fast, etc.. meal replacement with a low calorie drink. Of course it works, there's nothing in them.

I don't think that's relevant to what you've quoted. Incidental correlation.

i'd say the cons outweigh the pros. I did one for a few days, lost about 10 pounds, but I was sick when I started and didn't feel like eating. although I have seen videos of a woman on youtube, impatientdieter, and she was on a liquid diet. she had a very positive attitude and outlook on it and she looks amazing. lost over 100 lbs. It depends on you. Make sure you get enough nutrition and talk to a doctor before so you can see the true pros and cons. hope whatever you do works. :) merry Christmas, happy holidays,

Your body detoxes perfectly well. Just eat a balanced diet. "Detoxes' do not detox anything.

True, a liquid detox does stop the flow of bad things into your body for a set period of time though, with the bottom line being roughly the same as a healthy balanced diet at a calorie defecit. I'm not talking about long term detox, I'm talking about ones that are about a week in length, no more. It gives the body a break from all the processed crap. THEN start eating healthy after.
