Horrible music/bad influence??
I am a fan of some dubstep songs, some people hate it but I think it is pretty awesome music, especially to work out to. Well I was with my little cousins at a family thing for Christmas and we were all listening to music. Something about dubstep came up and I was going to show them a song by skrillex (The same damn band who did a dubstep song in the kids movie wreck it ralph) My cousin who is a bit older than me by a few years got on to me and told me it was a bad influence and not to show my younger cousins this because apparently "I know what dubstep is affiliated with" and it is " For older people only". Mind you these kids are 14-17, I got really annoyed at her for getting on to me for it and my little cousins got pissed off as well. There is something negative with affiliated with all sorts of different music that these kids listen to. Hell they were watching **** 10x worse than dubstep.
My question is, I know that there are alot of things affiliated with dubstep but what do you think? Is my cousin being stupid for no reason?

yah your cousin is being a bit strange. I like dubstep. What is it affiliated with??? I have no idea what negative stuff she is talking about.0

That is what I said. Its only negative if you personally affiliate it with negative things right? Hell I am pretty sure there are christian dubstep artists out there.. I am not mad about it anymore I just wanted to get other opinions.0

yup your cousin is trippin. Although I wouldn't call Skrillex dubstep - he has the odd dubstep song but really he is electro-house. dubstep would be more like dubba jonny, cookie monsta. electro-house is like knife party, swedish house mafia, feed me, zomboy. the difference is the beat. electro-house is 4 to the floor and dubstep isn't. plus there is less of the original lyrics to a song in dubstep.
oh and I love listening to this type of music while working out also. 140 bpm is great, really keeps you moving.0 -
I seriously have no idea what dubstep is...0

At 14 and 17 they're old enough to find their own music and if they want to listen to dubstep they'll do it whether you show them or not so yes your cousin is wrong in my opinion and sounds like she was being overly protective and treating them like they're still really young....0

Well.. Just look up dubstep on youtube, whatever you find I hope you like it! Hahahaha0

Yeah, They got all pissed off. I am very protective of my little cousins but at that age I was listening to worse crap than that... And my parents didn't care! I am not going to show something to them that is bad for them. It made me feel stupid when she wagged her finger at me like I was a child.0 -

Yeah, the majority of this involves NO WORDS AT ALL. So how it can be a bad influence is beyond me.0 -
My cousins are 13 and even their extremley protective parents that are very strict have no problems with letting them listen to dubstep.0

I just think that dubstep is crap  sorry.0

Haha well opinions vary! hahahaha0

the guys who introduced it to me all popped excstasy and went to raves til the sun came up. but, i like old sad country songs about drinking and cheating, so i can't hate on any kind of music.
neither should your cousin0 -
There is something bad from every music...if you want it to be.
Hell my daughter got her *kitten* majorly chewed by wife when she popped of CLEAN Nicki Minaj lyrics. Yeah, I know, couldn't have been many lyrics to sing.
Anyway, I pointed out to wife that I like listening to Minaj along with metal and any number of other things.
Listen to some country songs and you will find crap in some of them.
BTW, Moofey. Hello from a local.0 -
Sadly, it can be quite associated with drugs.... that may be the reference they were trying to make. I know that all the EDM stuff around here has a large amount of various drugs accessible. Hell - I have a tank top I bought last year - Sex, Drugs & Dubstep - where I x'd out the Drugs with Hello Kitty Duct Tape, because I'm sober, but still love music!
I listen to a wide range of music, and have to agree that Skrillex is not exactly dubstep but more ElectroGlitch (as per the bandmembers that make it). It has dubstep elements, to be certain, but it's too aggressive. I've got a huge selection of EDM and it's very wide-ranging, all with different subgenres. I listen to different bits for different reasons... but then, my first love is still electroindustrial.0 -
I listen to pretty hard core metal. Some of the bands advocate on-stage suicide, satan worshipping, and burning all churches to the ground. Some also just want to drink beer and get laid.0

The world would be boring if they didn't eh
What I'd like to know is who on earth makes up the names for the newer genres of "music" :laugh:0 -
How can bass drop be a bad influence. It's nothing but kick booty reggae if you really want to break it down. Let them listen to some of the more mainstream songs like Nero's Me & You (my fav) or Feed Me's Cloudburn. Theres nothing in there but fun lyrics and low bass drops. Maybe your cousin was picking up on that vibrating sort of orgasmic feeling that the music causes. MMMMMMM dubstep *drool!0

Music itself is not inherently good or bad. Lyrics can certainly be good or bad, depending on the content, and even on the age of the listener. Sometimes the culture that goes along with a certain style of music can be seen as bad, but just listening to a certain form of music doesn't guarantee that you'll get caught up in that culture. For example, I used to listen to reggae nonstop for about 5 years. Despite that, I never smoked weed, grew dreads, or did anything else that your stereotypical reggae listener does.
I would be more concerned with the lyrical content of music than anything else, because that can rub off on you. I went through a phase in high school where I listened to a lot of gangsta rap (NWA, 2 Live Crew, etc.). Not surprisingly, I developed some seriously bad language. When I quit listening to it, my language was much more easy to control. It's sort of the 'garbage in, garbage out' principle.0 -
I like when it's done well. But, it's just like any form of music, 99% is absolute crap, and through all the media hype and noise, there's that 1% that really gets it.
While it represents raving, it doesn't have to. It's just music. I wouldn't worry about it at all. It's kind of exciting music. It gets me really amped.0 -
Sometimes when the bass drops, all I can think about doing is dropping acid and sacrificing kittens. Your family may have a point.0

I am not familiar with any negative social influences associated with dubstep- particularly (of course I am American and not British and am not that familiar with the genre anyway). There are some circles of religious thought here in the US that would villify any sound with a back-beat as evil... Which pretty much eliminates even "Christian Rock" -- This opinion seems to be waning as we move forward in time... IMHO, it is the parents of the children that would have the right to have anything to say about this issue... I would honor the parent's view of the matter out of respect of their position of authority in the child's life... Another cousin? I suppose that would depend upon the set up of the particular family. Sounds a bit odd to me but perhaps there are circumstances here that I am unaware of.0

never heard this before. Have been exposed to all kinds of music from Yanni to ICP, which i love btw. just heard Dubba Jonny - Home VIP and cant see anything wrong with it0

Maybe they are stuck in the late 1990's and assume that all electronica leads to hordes of unwashed, Ecstasy-tripping kids wearing silly clothes and sucking on pacifiers?0
-
yeh dubstep isnt for children...not sure if u can call it music either.0
-
yeh dubstep isnt for children..
But why? I can understand not wanting your children to listen to a genre that drives you crazy because you dislike how it sounds. (I'm the same with country - when my niece and nephew are over, they have to listen to it on their MP3 players and we choose different music for all of us to listen to) But otherwise, why?0 -

Yeah why? And what defines music?0
