heart rate monitor present

So my very loverly hubsand bought me a heart rate monitor for Christmas, but it is just that, it doesn't do anything else, like give you an average over time, or calculate calories which is what I really wanted it for. It has a stop start timer so i could record how long my heart rate is over a certain numer.
So my question is should i try and return it (I'd really rather not as he hates buying presents and I don't want to offend him) or is there someway I can manage with the basic information - or can i use my android phone to pick up the reading and do the calculation? Thanks for any help.

If it doesn't have a chest strap it's probably wildly inaccurate. I'd thank him for being so thoughtful and see if you can return it. You can pick up a Polar FT4 very reasonably that will actually be useful to you.0

If you really want to keep it since it's from hubby (and he tired so hard) then just use the info it gives you and find an online calculator to put your weight and age in with the average heart rate and the time. It'll give you a pretty good idea I think. Or tell him you love the HRM but were wondering if he cared if you changed it for a different model since YOU weren't sure which one you wanted and might like to have a few different features (I find taking the blame helps his feelings not get hurt .0

oops sorry i was unclear, it has a chest strap but the watch that picks it up doesn't have any features, just a stopwatch and the heart rate, nothing else.0

I would go with this answer. If this doesn't do what you want it to do you're going to hate it and have resentment over the gift every time you use it. Just be honest with him and get something like the FT4. Everyone will be so much happier.
The FT4 will tell you average heart rate for the exercise period, calories burned, max heart rate, as well as showing you the current BPM during exercise.0 -
Do you have the Manufacturer and Model # info available to post? Maybe someone who has this can respond with something maybe you missed.0

If it gives you the average heart rate over your cardio session, you can enter the session duration time and average heart rate and get back a calorie burn from here:

hope this helps :-)0 -

its a Sigma PC 3.11
it doesn't give an average heart rate per exercise.0 -
OK, You're correct in that this particular HRM is very basic, and doesn't give you enough information to be useful for the purposes you are using it for (calorie counting and tracking).
If your husband is like most men he probably heard you at some time mention wanting a HRM and he went with the first one he found that wasn't hideously ugly without paying attention (or not knowing) which funtions you needed.
I would start with thanking him for the gift and for taking an interest in your better health. Then explain why this one does not meet your needs and why HRM X will. Most men are more logical than emotional, so if there is a justified reason why this one won't work other than "I just don't like it" his feelings shouldn't be hurt.0 -

I am hoping I get a HRM from either my mom or dad for Christmas. This is good info I'll need to remember in case I get one like this too. We have our Christmas this weekend.0
