I was reading the Women's Health Big Book of ..something rather and it has tons of great work out plans as well as some awesome nutrition tips. I was reading and it said the first step you should take in weight loss is cutting out added sugars, which obviously makes sense but I was just wondering how it worked for anyone out there? Have any of you ever tried cutting out added sugars for a while? did you lose weight? how fast? what else did you do with it?
i decided to cut out sugar for lent, which is about 40 days. I've been working out a lot and eating well and have been really discouraged this past week with my progress or lack there of, so i decided to try something new to maybe rev up my system a bit. just wondering if anyone else had tried a sugar cleanse and if it worked? i'm hoping by doing this i will lose some weight and also just get used to not eating sugar, and even after lent, pretty much keep it out of my diet.
let me know!. thanks!

Well I can't say I cut out ALL sugar this week, I still got some in my protein bars. But I gave up my coffee this week , which i loaded HEAVY with sugar, and had a few a day at least. They scale was down almost two pounds this week, and so far I have not seen that much in a week, until now. It has to make a difference. Refined sugar is just bad stuff, surely you will notice a difference soon. It's not easy , so good for you for sticking to that!0

Wow, cutting out coffee to me is such a big thing. I don't drink coffee but I drink diet pepsi, and I can't even cut that out. So i can imagine how hard it would be for someone who drinks coffee all the time to cut it out! so i am proud of you! And also, I think it's amazing that up until this week you hadn't seen up to 2lbs a week but you kept going all the way to 44lbs lost. I get discouraged after a few weeks of only 1lbs so.. you are amazing in my eyes lol
We will see how it goes this week.. this is my fourth day no sugar and I'm definitely noticing how hard it is going to be, there is just SO much i can't eat. even 100 calorie snacks and things like that.. there is so much sugar EVERYWHERE. and i live in a small place where getting organic healthy foods isn't always cheap, easy or even available. i can do it though!0 -

Here's a thread that might interest you on the boards. Cutting out processed foods which many many contain simple carbs (read: sugar) can benefit us so many ways. As the days go on with you cutting it out like you're doing, you'll struggle at first because it's detoxing from something our body doesn't need in our system.
But it does get easier and there'll come a time not long from now when grabbing an apple, adding some protein like a bit of cheese for a snack will make you realize just how the sweetness of fruit will satisfy you!
Wish you the best!:flowerforyou:
Edit: wanted to add, I've never heard the term 'sugar cleanse' but what a great way to put it, makes perfect sense, I'm glad you shared the book title!:drinker:0 -

Just checked out the book and it looks great! Do you get the magazine?
Thanks again0 -
My very first step for weight loss and healthy living was to cut out sugar. I still have small amounts...like Cheerios have 2g per serving and most breads have some. Besides the obvious like sweets etc, I stopped eating things like ketchup even my PB is sans sugar. Chinese food is a sugar disaster! Just read the labels and see how many grams of sugar are in things. It is surprising.
I lost 20# over a two year period with just that and changing nothing else. I wasn't excercising, I wasn't counting calories, I was eating what ever I wanted when i wanted, I just omitted things with sugar or high fructose corn syrup.
Best of luck. There is a Yahoo group for Sugar addicts that I found helpful.0 -

No not quite, my ticker is how many pounds yet to go, not how many gone. I am down 5 lbs from when I started at the end of January. I am expecting it to go slow, and what i hope for is to be at my goal weight in one year. i am just getting started, so seeing a little loss on the scale is encouraging, if it will just keep going at this rate I will be where I want, .. in a year.
And yes the coffee quit was terrificly difficult, and bit painful, lol. I am still not out of the woods on that, but over the hump I think. IF I can just STAY quit. Once I am clear of that for a month, I will probably do what you are , and try and quit all sugar for awhile. You are SO right, it's just everywhere! You have a challenge ahead of you that is for sure! It won't be easy, but I am sure you can do it, and I expect it will reflect on the scale for you too.
Patience is hard. The weight can't be gone soon enough! I figure as long as it is moving down steadily I am on my way.
Let us know how the sugar quit goes, and stick with it!
DeeDee, I had NO idea that it was in Chinese food, wow! thanks for the heads-up on that0 -
Cool, I will check it out!
20 lbs is pretty awesome for eating what you want, and mostly cutting out sugars!0 -
wow, i never knew there was a bunch of sugar in chinese food either but i would suppose that makes sense!
and sorry about the mistake twentyten, i obviously am not very observant. but congrats on the progress you have made and again on quitting the coffee. im sure it will get easier for both of us as we go! keep me updated!0
