Cleansing your Thyroid?

Hi again, I have heard multiple things about weight loss and thyroid/liver problems. That weight loss can be harder when your thyroid and liver aren't free of toxins. Ways you can help them stay healthy is by drinking water, taking certain vitamins, etc. Does anyone have any specific information about this? I have been drink over 8 cups of water a day, and want to see if there are any other ideas of techniques that helped? Thanks, :).

Your kidney and liver, if functioning properly, should be clearing out those toxins. If not, you have bigger problems that can't be taken care of by simply changing your diet. Irregular thyroid function may be related to weight loss/gain, but you need to get it tested by a doctor to see if it's a problem.

I really hope you meant to say weight loss can be more difficult if your thyroid is not functioning properly. The function of the thyroid, by the way, is to regulate hormones, NOT to promote weight loss. The purpose of the liver is to purify your blood, NOT to promote weight loss.

I'm not sure you know what a thyroid is. Perhaps you mean kidneys?

    Either way, no.

    This may help:

If your thyroid is regulated, losing weight should be no problem. Our bodies are amazing and have been cleansing themselves for ever. Eat mostly healthy and it works itself out, literally and figuratively.

ETA: and by regulate I mean, unless you have a thyroid disorder and need meds to regulate the hormone level, your thyroid is regulated on its own.

Have you been diagnosed with thyroid problems?. Is there anything to suggest you have one? There is no such thing as a 'thyroid cleanse' and cleanses are totally unnecessary anyway.

Stop sweating the small stuff and start eating a balanced diet at a reasonable caloric deficit and throw in some exercise.

Your doctor can check if you have problems with either the liver or thyroid by blood test. Iodine supplementation can help with mild thyroid insufficiency as mentioned I am not aware of any reason that your thyroid would need cleansing. If you have liver issues there are certain herbal things you can look into taking such as milk thistle, dandelion. Most people will find a mild detox of the liver simply by abstaining from fatty foods, caffeine, alcohol (and dairy or wheat/gluten if you are intolerant of these). If you are eating healthy nourishing foods, which presumably you would be if you use MFP, then any detox that your liver may need should take care of itself pretty quickly. If you have real problems (as shown up by bad liver function test of hypothyroid) then you probably need to consult a good naturopath, or if you prefer conventional methods, your GP.

I agree with this. I was diagnosed with thyroid problems many years ago. I was taking Armour Thyroid, but never felt good enough on it and couldnt lose weight. I have been taking natural herbs for mine and feel so much better. Talk to your doctor about natural herbs. See if he will regulate you on natural herbs. Also Soy isnt good for the thyroid. From everything I have read natural herbs can restore the thyroid, synthetic thyroids let the thyroid die and only functions with medication. Last time I had mine checked the doctor told me mine was perfect. But be checked by a doctor and have him regulate you.

Iodine supplementation only works if your thyroid issues are caused by low iodine intake, which is pretty rare in the developed world (though there are some areas in the US with depleted soil; or people who don't eat enough veggies).

In fact, in those with sufficient or excess iodine, additional supplementation has been shown to further reduce thyroid function.

"as shown up by bad liver function test of hypothyroid" -- this makes no sense. The liver and thyroid are two different organs; there is no "bad liver function test of hypothyroid".

To the OP: as others have said, there is no such thing as a "thyroid cleanse". If you're concerned about your thyroid, please ask for your free T3 and free T4 to be tested.
